International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have several hens with very high tails.
I brought in a low tailed cockerel to fix this fault and did well but messed up by not selecting only low tailed pullets.

There were a lot of squirrel tailed cockerels this year because of this.
some time we don t see the trait we working for in the first generation , but with a good pairing we will see it in the second generation .
this is why I m well focussed on LS and MS , the problem I m having I only know this hens or all your hens from few photos .I do not have enough data to work with like my chooks
for me each time and every day I go to see them I take photos and I spend time to watch one hen or one rooster in detail ,so I have a largedata about all my breeders .I know thwm from inside out .
all my work with you guys is bassed on the quality of the photos .

This would make sense.
I could not figure out why so many grow outs were so bad. Jr did not look so terrible but he did not pass down anything good.
it is not how he looked what important what did he pass down to his progeny is the fact .he did not pass many good thing for sure .
I always say there is a defference between the show bird ( how the bird look ) and the breeder bird ( what he throw )

It IS hard to see anything in just a few bad photos from the other side of the world!

I spend a lot of time out in the pens with them. Studying them and such.

My problem is learning what I am looking at. What I'm looking for.
I'm getting there but it can be overwhelming.

A person can spend all day out in the coops and it's just wasted time until they learn what their looking at. Haha

I'm slowly getting there. I've learned so much and made many mistakes that have taught me hard lessons.

Couldn't do it without you my friend.

high tail is not bothering me because it is cosmetic and simple to breed out .
body type and leg are constitution traits .foundation ,very hard to breed ,take very long time and great attention to detail .
we can fix high tail .dark eyes .parasitic white in a short periode of time few breeding season ,but the body type will take long time .it is very complex matter .

So from now on, this will be the goal no matter how bad every thing else is. Body type first.

Cockerel #2 has a long back and shape. Would breeding him to LS or MS improve progeny? Or would it be a waste of time.

make it simple for your self my friend ,each time cofus on one particular hen ,lok at her see how she move ,how she stand ,how she carry her tail .what her legs look like ,wright them all down .
I have posted many post describing how good marans should look like .
one chooks and one trait at the time you will get far .never get overwhemed .
never look at your flock all at the same time .will be confused for sure .

today I spent all my obsevation time looking at Dark Angel .I noticed that all my hens have clean bumb after I wormed them 2 weeks ago except Dark Angel .she still have durty bumb . she look very healthy and active ,so I have to do some thing about her soon .maybe she did not drink the worming solution ?

we achived the long flat back and low tail ,that is moving forward ,breding him to a specific hen with a good legs we will get a more complete and correct body type ,this thin will take time but we can do it ,you have a great hens .
stay focus that what we are breeding for BODY TYPE AND GOOD LEGS .do bother about other thing .
I know you cockerels are miles better than they sire 100% .so we did breed some thing good .we just need to contenue that all .

I will do this.
They look awful right now after the breeding season. Bare backs and heads on some. Mr. Good comb was rough when breeding. Glad he's gone.

2 hens have gone broody. Not a good trait.

I have been worming because of dirty bumbs too and have a couple that need to be wormed again directly too.
