International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

If your barred rock is currently fertilized you might consider popping an egg or two of hers in the incubator. Marans eggs can be difficult to see through when you candle them. If you have a couple light colored eggs it might help you learn what you are looking at. The EE could serve the same purpose but since she just started laying they might not be fertilized and would be clear with no development. I did my Marans along with light Brahama and EE eggs. It seemed helpful for me to have some easy to see ones in the mix.

... Well that's funny. The wife says to me this afternoon. "If your setting eggs, you might as well set a few 'Morty' eggs" Morty was our MMM that passed this summer.
So I've got 3 eggs going in.
Problem here is I swapped roos on 12/21. The 3 pullets, Angel, Copper and Raven took right to Kong immediately so he was mating them. So Ravens eggs should be good with either King or Kong as Sire. Mostly King depending how long after the 21st she stayed fertile with him.
Now King on the other hand only took to the BA's being black. I haven't seen him mating any BR's or the EE. So if any do hatch they'll be from Kong still. But Esther is a wildcard cuz she's been molting so she might not have any fertilized eggs.
So with all being said, I got 3 BR eggs dated around the 1st hoping they might still be from Kong. I just took 6 dozen eggs to the food bank last night so that's the earliest eggs I have. Anything newer risk being duds.

Soooo... We'll see.

Hopefully its nothing serious, all my time spent here he's gone rogue at least twice for months. IIRC one was for covid.
Have you checked the French Marans site?

Yes I will do. I’ll get some today because I don’t have many good one of her daughter. I’ll post a couple of Chanel now. I can’t take much credit, she’s my original BlCM that I hatched out from eggs I bought. I’ll find some I have of her younger later to post along with her daughter for comparison. These are some I have from the past five months or so, before and after her moult.

Yes, she’s very chunky. I couldn’t have asked for more from my first marans, not giving me much improvement work to do. My biggest concern for her is her tail, I think her sons will have squirrel tail, at least when bred to my roo Loki, who has one already. If one of my BCM cockerels grow up to be better quality than Loki I will swap them, their dam has a nice small and low tail. Chanel did have a son but he was a cross and the rats got to him as a chick and I never even found his body. This year I will hatch more marans out to increase my numbers, mostly from my own but I do want some English type cuckoos for my eventual GCM project.

I think her tail is nice. But I'm not experienced like you to see it. Some pics show a little high but others low. Like an alert.
That's the same with Kings son. He was a spitting image of Dad. Squirrel tail and white underfluff.
