International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Yep, I spot nothing that stands out, maybe @Bantambird will know of the silvers have different hatch down than coppers. All your hatch tomorrow, I assume, will be just the same little penguins we all love. You’ll see the differences when their hackles grow in.
Yes, but is there a possibility of a recessive that may hatch?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Potentially recessive white but you haven’t ran into it with your coppers before so it’s unlikely. I doubt any other colours will be carried like recessive patterns or lavender, due to the nature of the breed. Your BCMs shouldn’t carry recessive genes since they were hatchery birds, and hatcheries will find recessives easily due to large numbers and breed these out.

Possibly coming from Solo, from Bantambirds flock?

Here are the eBay photos of the (silver?) cuckoos I’ve been looking at. These aren’t the same as the pullets I’ve got coming. They are a bit blurry.

The tails are high (but English marans should have higher tails than French) but small and tidy. Eggs aren’t as good but not terrible. See the silver hackles on the boys, that’s what’s intriguing me. I also just get a sense of size from them.

Yes, but it will more than likely only occur in F2 and after due to how recessives work. You may get lucky and avoid it.
Unless you want white marans, then I guess that would be unlucky, but you always have Poppy anyway.
Ok thanks. I did not know this.

I'm not sure yet if I want to breed Whites. I'm leaning towards it, but still lots to focus on in other areas but if the opportunity comes I may run with it, cuz I need more Marans and another project. 🤣

One of these days I'll need to dig into the genetics involved. I am curious how long it would take to breed pure Whites?

The foundation is excellent, type and tails are there, just need to pen them up and really just go with it.

Breed two recessive whites, and you’ll only get recessive whites. Regardless of any other genes, they’re all being masked by recessive white. So if recessive whites popped up, breed them together, then you have your white marans. Nothing complicated, so maybe have it as a side project for when the recessive white genes pop up again down the line. Or purposely line breed Poppy, you’ll get some white F2s to use.

Doesn't the Bluish leg color coincide with the Recessives white?

Ignorance here but don't Pure Whites have slate legs?

What's the fix for this?

I believe they are supposed to have white legs, the slate legged gene shouldn’t exist in marans. Grey legs from the birchen gene are reduced by recessive white. I’m going to check maybe it’s different with the French standard.

Edit: Yes, the legs should be as white/pink as possible, no grey at all. If I remember right recessive white is better than dominant at doing this, though I could be wrong there.

So in simple terms, Recessive x Recessive would be pure?

And just a matter of choice whether one wants Recessive in their flock or breed it out.
Much like @Bantambird says it's just a occasional bonus but she doesn't actively breed them. A 4th bonus color if you will.
