International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

View attachment 4116225View attachment 4116224View attachment 4116226Here are some show winners from the Marans Club of GB website. One large and two banties. They are dark cuckoos (no evidence of the other two on the photos, despite being in the standards), but look quite light to me. I don’t expect single barred cocks to be as pale as this, I thought they’d be less clear.

Maybe the standard judges look for has changed despite it not being in writing, with the judges preferring double barred boys?

I guess I’ll have to learn as I take my marans to show. Hopefully I can take my two DCMs as a pullet and cockerel in the winter shows, but if bird flu cancels them again they’ll have to go as adults next year (if it clears up).

I’m also going to join the Marans Club of GB (it’s only £10 a year) so maybe I’ll learn more then.

P.S: if people would rather me make a separate thread for English Marans to avoid confusion with the Continental/USA type I’ll happily do that.
I think the judges where looking at some thing else beause all the 3 cuckoo rooster are double barred , plus the first one should be not a winner of any thing do you see his horible comb ,
don t bother by showing if you have that type of judges ,westing your time they have no clue what they are talking about .
what a joke .
That why I do not show .I breed high quality so I can have a ward full of great marans and you my friends know that ,I do no need any judges ,espicaly bad one and there is a lot of them around this days, sorry to say that ,

I agree with that comb, I thought that immediately after seeing it. There must have been some terrible marans if that one won.
The thing is that judges seem to have one standard they apply to all breeds in a way.
What’s worse is that one of those awards is by the Marans club itself!
(Maybe I become a member and sort them out from within!😂)
Thanks again.

I wasn’t referring to a picture of my own, just wondering if you think the best Golden cuckoos are single or double barred, because I’ve seen a variety of shades.

I think before you may have said single barred dilute the gold less so are better?

it is all about the quality of the copper in the line ,
I have seen good looking golden cuckoos from both ,DF and Dark
I personaly prefere breeding back a golden cuckoo hens to a BCM rooster with a rich copper to reiforce the quality of the copper in the cuckoo line ,this mating will produce only dark cuckoo cockerels so they can go over golden cuckoo hens to produve DF ,
this is just my way of doing thing to balance the matting and reiforce the good genes , other peoples do it defferently ,
