International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

the best dark cuckoo will be the one come out of Double barred cockbird over a solid black hen , all the progeny will be dark cuckoo old schol UK strain ,

Thank you, I have often wondered this.
I guess it might depend on the strain too.
For example maybe some people with darker doubled barred cockerels that may produce too dark single barred (because the barring might not be defined). While light double barred cocks may produce nice single barred cockerels.

if we comply to the SOP theand true genetic the dable bared DF ) cuckoo will be lighter in colour because of the effect of the double barring , if any body has a darker double cuckoo then they have no clue what going on in they breeding pen .
Dark cuckoo bred to Dark cuckoo ( all the cuckoo hens are dark cuckoo any way ) than like so say maybe the barring will not be ixpressed properly too dark with less barring , that is possable ,that way the good breeders in the UK they always use the double barred cuckoo or a solid black hen guess it is a similar way of breeding the Blue it better to breed the Blue to the black rather than Blue to a Blue

This makes sense. I’ve seen some variation, as far as I’m aware some double barred have been show winners, but I don’t know what’s going on to darken them either.

It makes sense you forgot about them, because only the UK recognises them, right?

Australia as well I get asked a lot question about them because they importted them from the UK but when they bred them together they got double barred and peoples where shocked ,they had no clue at all .pure double cuckoo cockerel hatch down is silver with a big dot on his head ,the dark cuckoo cockerel will hatch black ( blue if is from blue line ) .
I have few of them and I always had them but I don t reconize them as variety , they are a result of crossing
I like they colour that why I always have them around .

@ozmarans do you think that a show quality golden cuckoo would double or single barred? Because I’ve seen some pictures that seem paler than this guy but still not too light.

Here are some show winners from the Marans Club of GB website. One large and two banties. They are dark cuckoos (no evidence of the other two on the photos, despite being in the standards), but look quite light to me. I don’t expect single barred cocks to be as pale as this, I thought they’d be less clear.

Maybe the standard judges look for has changed despite it not being in writing, with the judges preferring double barred boys?

I guess I’ll have to learn as I take my marans to show. Hopefully I can take my two DCMs as a pullet and cockerel in the winter shows, but if bird flu cancels them again they’ll have to go as adults next year (if it clears up).

I’m also going to join the Marans Club of GB (it’s only £10 a year) so maybe I’ll learn more then.

P.S: if people would rather me make a separate thread for English Marans to avoid confusion with the Continental/USA type I’ll happily do that.

No need, this is the INTERNATIONAL Marans thread, friend.

(it’s also the BCM thread…) 😂

Thank you, I thought everyone would appreciate seeing the other standard anyway, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t clogging people’s notifications. They’re not too dissimilar, really only the legs and recognised colours are different.
