International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Quote: @Winterhorses..... look how much they have changed in a week. Didn't you have Shy Guy at the bottom of the list? I would wait, what is one more crowing rooster! The only time it really makes a difference is if you have none. LOL

Haha, nice! That's a lot of roosters! I mean, I guess my crowing boys can't be much more annoying than the baying hunting dogs and gunshots I hear all night long (I'm a night owl). It's just there's a small church just to my left where a nice but much older minister and his wife live. They've also got health problems, and I feel like if I annoy them too much, I'm going to hell or something, lol.
Take them free eggs.. and baked goods are a nice touch. Like a peace offering. I don't think you are condemned to hell just because your roosters crow a lot. lol

And maybe when you cull any roosters later, process one or two and take them some home grown chicken.

And I am right there with you on the neighbor with the coon hounds and guns. Heck my husband is always out target shooting too. We are just a loud bunch I guess. lol

That's a good pic of the GFF rooster. Gorgeous!

ok, that is much better pic of the GFF boy in post 3161. His tail doesn't look squirrely in this pic.
Best,
Karen

the white on the black feathers is not just a genetic accumulation of cross over genes is caused as well by health and stress too . if we breed from a darker stock ( not Penguin type at hatch ) and less white or none if possible of a white feathers at young age than we can eradicate the parasitic white . the face of a pure and clean black copper chick should be free from any white . easy to say that because there is not many lines of black copper/Birchen/Blue copper/Silver cuckoo marans world wide free from this parasitic white . need serious breeders with a determine attitude and years of breeding . first we need to find this subject ,than isolate them .than multiply them in the end start breeding them . most of this true black copper marans stock are culled by ignorance of they breeders ,witch they focused on the Penguin type . I have both chicks hatching now . from all the ER variety . I m observing they differences . there are some with a pure black and short hatch down almost black other are Penguin but with less white marking on they faces the third group are the penguin type with almost a white face or too much white . I ll see how each one of this will feather up as a adult chooks man
Chooks Man, I look forward to hearing conclusions / observation as these groups of chicks grow out. Keith

Neck nicely colored ,strong and well arched .
nice copper with a little flame just what we need on the hackle

Lancet .nice copper colored
Shoulders need more Red on them
wing mirror nice black ,sign of purity
shanks well colored not too dark neither pale .well feathered
LL
well spaced too .nice and strait .pinkish at the bottom
pure black tail feathers and under fluff
tail forming a nice pyramid .the way we want it .
well wide from the rear .his daughter will be a good layer .

I really like this sort of photos .
working photos .some body has spend time taking them one by one .

BRAVO hope every one will spend that much time and thought on taking photos for the comment . it is fair for the animal .I can see evey thing I want to see .like he is in the front of me .

Thank you . love you work and dedication .

with this 2 cockerels .they complement each other

Copper have a nicer pure black under fluff and better colored shoulders plus well colored shanks .that will translate too his will pass down this qualities to his progeny .his daughters will be nicely black with less sheen .some of his progeny will have not feathered shanks if mated to a well feathered hens . low percentage .

Shy guy will yield 100% feathered shanks progeny but will have a parasitic white for sure . his under fluff is lighter and his shanks are well too light like a wheaten

I think Blade will compliment Copper better
LL
baybe he is lucking mass or just a photos . I think he is going to be the bigger one when fully matured .
his progeny will not have a same problem as Shy guy progeny .

Copper and Blade progeny will work well together
Blade will add feathered shank without introducing the white under fluff ( nasty to breed out ) and will gain mass from Copper progeny

For me .
Copper
Blade
Shy guy

I had to steer at them for a while .

Thank you Chooks man for your assessment of Mud. I appreciate the compliments. Our birds deserve nothing less than hard work and dedication. And as long as I own them I will give them just that. I will strive to breed my birds forward, hopefully improving them with every year.

He does have a higher tail and shorter back than I would like, that is true. Those are traits passed down from either of his potential sires (the LP and GFF cocks Redbanks posted pics of earlier). He makes up for it with his sweet disposition. That is definitely a trait worth passing on. His tail angle is high even when he is more relaxed walking around the coop. We will work on tail angle and back length in this line. I'm hoping he colors up more as he matures also.

I am looking forward to hatching his offspring and watching them grow out.

Okay, so I reeeally need to get rid of at least 1 of my BCM boys because I don't have the room. It seemed Shy Guy was the one out, but I got a better picture of him, and now I'm just not sure... Is it still Copper then Blade, with Shy Guy out based on yesterday's pictures?? --------------------------- Copper: If only this boy had some feathering on his legs!!! ---------------------------------- Blade: Old pic of Blade for shape comparison: Blade in same light as Copper: ------------------------ Shy Guy: ----------
Well, what a difference a couple of weeks make! In order I like Shy Guy, Cooper and Blade. Blade has too much bad melanin. Shy Guy has really come on - very nice color, classic Marans body type, good comb, and nice eyes. Same for Cooper except his body type is slightly triangular and lacks feathered legs. Adding featherbed legs is easy so no big deal. Shy Guy and Copper are more like bookends. Good Luck, Keith

I will try to bring them all in and get individual pictures of them as soon as I can. They seem to pose better for me on the kitchen counter. lol

Here are a couple of older pictures I have posted previously on this thread of one of the pullets he is with. She has not started laying yet. She has filled out a lot since these pictures. The other Marans pullets he is with are splash coppers.
