International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here is Jake's son, Jack. To compare with Jake, he's got better legs and a much better comb, he inherited a nice body, but I saw a bit of gold leakage in the wings. Unlike his dad, he isn't showing parasitic white in his primaries, but he has a few white feathers on his toe. He has a touch of white lacing on his breast nearest the hackle that Jake doesn't have. He's finally filling out nicely. He has a wierd gait sometimes, where he steps really high, I'm not sure what that's about.

he is as big as his father ,still have a lot of feeling to do .
I can see some white on his outer toes .so does carry the parasitic white but not at a early stage of his life .he ll develop more white as he grow older .

his shoulders are not as pure silver as his sire Jake he is still Ar/ar+ ( still have some autossomal red one corry .)
the red leakage must come from the mama hen .

the white /silver on the breast nearest the hackle is a great sign . Birchen strain some time do have some lacing .

I like him ,with a good Birchen hen he ll throw some nice chicks for sure .

Can I please get a critique on this guy? I bought Marans for the dark eggs and for their meat, but this boy is so pretty that I named him Handsome. I'm wondering if I should start singling out chicks from him and a pretty hen I have who lays about an 7-8 on the scale and has eyes that are a bit lighter than I'd like and just a TINY bit of mossiness on her wing tips to keep.

Handsome:

Please ignore the muddy run, it rained the night before I tool this pic. Also, Handsome is 6 months old and I'm not sure if the Maran cockerel's tail feathers come in later? They still seem to be growing in.

I don't have a good picture of the hen, but here is a pic of my eggs. The very darkest one (top right corner) is hers:

So sorry to hear you lost Hercules Jr.! On the bright side you have his brother and most importantly you have the knowledge to make more like Hercules.

Best of luck my friend!

Tiegrsi, Your Handsome has nice uniformed copper hackles, ear tufts and saddle feathers with good copper coloring on his breast. I also like his comb / wattles, eye color and leg feathering. Does he have pinkish undertones on his shanks / feet? I do not see any red coloring on his shoulders (upper part of his wings) - his wings look solid back to me - the upper wings should have red coloring. Are my eyes deceiving me? Please describe his wing coloring. You have very nice egg color - well done! Keith

start with a rooster ( what his name please?) what good - good type. - nice strong head - gorgeous eyes - well colored ears tufts ,does match the colour of the hackle. - well arched neck ,great length . - nice comb a little bigger but with nice points ( 5 will greater) - wide shoulder and well colored ( rich red ) - nice blue tone - well feathered shanks and good colour too - nice tail ,form and shape a little higher make in the back look shorter . Faults ; - hackle with golden hues ( straw ) should be one color ( copper ) Blue always dilute the copper - white fluffs at the end of his back where meet the tail - tail held high - Wattles too big chooks man
I agree 100%, hes not the best but one of the only one I could find, I got a young bcm prospect but he's not quite these yet. this is one of the chick's off of him.

Handsome does not have very much copper on his shoulders, just a little. He does have pink on his feet. Here are a few other pictures, in order, Handsome's wings, then his feet, then his brother Nobandy (who's comb I don't like as much but who has more color on his shoulders), then one of my hens - they are all almost identical, though this one has some dark spots in her eyes, and I have one that has fairly mossy wings. I tried to take a pic of the exact hen I want to breed but they all came out blurry. The one I want to breed has slightly less copper around her neck, but her irises are clear.

And thank you! I feel like I lucked out on egg color because I have seen a lot of others who got Marans for the dark eggs and wound up with much lighter colors.

I think you are making a wrong chose in picking witch rooster is a best to breed from .
Handsome is great in a lot trait but he has one big fault ,hard to breed it back in . he is missing a red shoulder plus he has a lot copper on his chest .

Nobandy maybe has a bad comb ( the comb come more from the hen not as match from the rooster ) but he has a great body color and well colored shoulder and back

the hen has a good mass and great coppery hackle . love her comb a little bent at the front but has a nice point .

this hen if she lay dark eggs could be bred to both roosters , so her progeny will be half brother/sisters . they will be mated together to create a line from her.

you are not far of .you have all the genes you need to make your line .
Never work with one rooster ,except if he is well bred and faultless .
always work with 2 rooster ,who compliment each other .
I think Handsome and his brother compliment each other well . what missing in one is well define in another like ;
Handsome missing the red shoulder - Nobandy has well colored shoulder
Nobandy has a big comb - Handsome has better one
Handsome has wrong placement of the AR ( Autossomal red ) his shoulder should be red not his chest . - hard to see Nobandy s chest .

to have a great result in breeding marans chooks you need to balance your breeding pens .

All the best .
