International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hi, I have two coops with sussexs in them. One has 7 light sussexs hens and 1 light sussex rooster and the other one has lavender, coronation and silver hens and coronation roosters and a silver rooster. In the light sussex coop there are 2 hens and a rooster which have snot on their beaks and sneezing a lot and 2 other hens that sneeze a lot. The other coop is fine and they are all healthy. The chickens have been getting worse. This started about 2-3 weeks age. It has been raining a lot and been a little cold in the morning. What do I do to make them all healthy again. I do live in Australia if there is any difference in things between countries. Also the light sussex hens are 30 weeks old and only one that i know is laying and it is laying about 2 eggs a day. In the other pen there is 14 hens and they are laying about 2-4 eggs a day. The most of the silver hens are laying and one of the coronations are laying too but non of the lavenders are laying and most of the coronations. Is there anything that i should do to make them lay more or are they just to young. I give them yogurt which is i think is making the ones which are laying lay more and i am giving them apple cider in there water. The light sussex hen is laying about 2 eggs a day. Every time i see it in the egg box and it hopes up there are two eggs under it and same with one of the silver sussexs in the other pen. That is all i know that helps them become healthier and lay more eggs. If anybody can help me with any of my problems that would be great.

Chickens can't lay more than one egg a day without serious bodily harm to themselves. One a day is the limit, as it typically takes 23 hours to put the shell on the egg.

the hen who lay this sort of eggs need name and to be bred too

PS can you post some nice photos of Nobandy .

Thank you for your input. I didn't know that the comb was determined by the hen. I had not thought to keep more than one roo, but perhaps I can pair Nobandy to the hen with less copper and Handsome to the hen with more and the colors will balance out?

The hen in the picture lays dark eggs as well, just not quite as dark. I will be glad to breed more than one hen.

More pictures of Nobandy:

Handsome does not have very much copper on his shoulders, just a little. He does have pink on his feet. Here are a few other pictures, in order, Handsome's wings, then his feet, then his brother Nobandy (who's comb I don't like as much but who has more color on his shoulders), then one of my hens - they are all almost identical, though this one has some dark spots in her eyes, and I have one that has fairly mossy wings. I tried to take a pic of the exact hen I want to breed but they all came out blurry. The one I want to breed has slightly less copper around her neck, but her irises are clear. And thank you! I feel like I lucked out on egg color because I have seen a lot of others who got Marans for the dark eggs and wound up with much lighter colors.
IMO NoBandy is the better of your two cockerels - his color is more correct. Handsome has some good traits but missing the red shoulder is tough to correct. You can use both cockerels for breeding but you need to be very precise in your mating selections so you emphasize the positive traits and deemphasize the negative traits in both you cockerels and hens. Balance is the key. The following are some the laws of inheritance in breeding: Inheritance from the Hen: Body Type Comb Type (chose hen with proper comb shape, size, etc.) Egg Size, Form & Shape Body Mass / Size Inheritance from the Rooster: Body color (best trait of the Cockerel) Eye Color Body Mass / Size Inheritance from both Rooster and Hen: Back - length Tail (Hen with a low tail can correct Rooster with a high tail) Egg Color (both sexes carry the dark egg genes) You have a great start with your birds all you need to do is sort how to breed them forward. If you post individual pics of your breeding cockerels and hens the good folks on this thread will help you with the mating selections. Good luck! Keith

Ah Australia .where about .
I m based in NSW .
we surely had a lot rain lately and there is more to come .

your choos have a cold . you need to give them Antibiotic .
the one I found does work magic is Triple C antibiotic . 5 g per little of water for a duration of 7 day .fresh solution every day .that will fix them for you .
I normally give them that for one week ,than I ll wait 2 more weeks and give them again for one more week.

Triple C is only medication I use in my farm .and I have a great result .

Apple cider is really good .
I give mine 20 ml per liter of water for one week every month ( last week of the month )

the hens start molting here in OZ so the laying will drop and come to end .
I m only getting 5/6 eggs a day from 40 hens ,
they will restart in couple of months .it is normal

here what do I give mine this time of the year . Showbird breeder MP pallet soaked in worm milk and Vitamin B complex . I gave them this mixture in the morning .they love it .
I gave them as well Sun flower seed ( black one) 20g plus 10 g of wheat , they get that in the afternoon .

Sunflower seed help they feather to become oily .and keep them worm .good for them this time of the year.

hope that help

your rooster are almost identical . well bred . they just need toning that all .

I agree with you ,work with both hens and both roosters ,so you ll end up with different progeny better for a long term breeding .

eyes color come from the Rooster . so don t worry about your hen with a dark eye . both of your rooster have stunning eyes .

Thanks so much! Y'all have worlds of knowledge more than I, when I have only just started delving into breeding. I really appreciate all the help. I will try to lay out pics/profiles for my hens and cockerels over the next few days to post in a single post. I am so excited that I have good birds! I read the breed standard and it was a bit confusing to me, some of the lingo...I thought Handsome and Nobandy's eyes were perhaps too light because it says "reddish bay" so I thought they should be more red. I have an EE roo with fiery red eyes and perhaps by comparison I thought the boys were of colored.

Thanks again!

I am based in Bathurst NSW Australia. I breed light, lavender, silver and coronation sussexs. Ok i have somebody coming to look at them in the next few days. I have been putting apple cider vinegar in their water for months and they love it and most of them are looking good. I will give them the medicine. Thanks for the help.
