International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Question:

My year old FBCM hen has stopped laying for about 1.5 months. Should I cull her? This seems excessive even if she is molting.
She was always the sporadic later between the two I have currently.

I will update shortly with pullet photos from my first hatch. Generation one of my coop!

some of my hens (other breeds) stop laying for about 2 months and when they restart they lay normally for the rest of the year.

what colour of the egg does she lay? marans are supposed to lay less but colour is important. less eggs - darker colour.

@Chooks man

should I decide what cockerel to choose at age of 2 months?

1. is a keeper anyway

2. has a bad comb (a bit looped, not well serrated, like somewhat coronation, kind of s-shape) but has copper on hackles, back and a few spots on the chest

3. has a bad comb (not well serrated, like somewhat coronation ) and is too dark. has (dark) copper on the hackles only. UPDATE: some copper popping out his back.

the rest (body shape, etc) are more or less the same at all 3. all 3 of them have bad combs. the only difference is the colour at the moment. are they too young to know what colour they will end up with?

UPDATE: I guess that I should give away the s-shape comb cockerel. can anyone confirm this?

They're a four at best if I recall correctly. They aren't any darker than my barnyard mix unfortunately.

Hello. I have a question....if you cross different varieties of marans can you still call the offspring of that mix a marans chicken? Im not talking of the colors that are ok to mix like black and blue...I'm taking of those mixes that produce something not standard of the breed. can you sell them like marans? In the ameraucanas you call them with other name (easter eggers). But in other breeds like the marans is allowed? is accepted?

easter eggers are ameraucana and some other breeds mix. if you cross the same breed with different colours it is still pure breed but mixed colours. I have seen an ad for araucanas mixed colours.

the S shape comb is out in my opinion
at 2 month I select for
1) body type
2) eye color
3) straightness of the legs
4) early feathering type
5) growth pattern

comb and body color plus mass I wait tell they grow more 5/6 month
