International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

They are from the same hatch, "

I think they are brothers, but not 100% sure on that, but probably. Now that brother is gone he won't stop crowing. Literally. All. The. Time. Anything I can do to get him to quiet down?? He's 17 weeks 4 days. I'm integrating them with my one year old hens. The head hen & him have scuffled a few times but he's still crowing A LOT. Jean-Luc didn't crow incessantly :/

PioneerChick,

Some Roosters are more vocal than others but basically they crow whenever they feel like it. Is he penned with the hens / pullets or is there another Rooster on the property? Either way he is claiming his territory (hens and/or physical space). He's still young so he may settle down as he matures and becomes more comfortable in his role as flock protector.

If the crowing is a real problem, I've heard of a product called the No-Crow Collar thats worn around his neck that reduces the Roosters ability to fully expel the air in his air sacs which muffles the crow. Basically the product is a nylon strap with Velcro so I guess it's a one-size fits all kinda thing. I've never considered using this product nor have I seen it in action.

Take Care,
Keith

Lost the second choice blue silver Cockerel yesterday. Did a necropsy, and all we know for sure is that he was healthy in every way with no signs of disease or injury at all. I'm pretty lucky my mother is a veterinarian, although she doesn't specialize in birds. My guess is he choked, since his crop was very full and he hadn't digested breakfast yet. At least we know that in general, the flick is probably healthy.

The number three blue silver is going to have to be a cull. He's getting copper in his wings and solid straw colored hackles. It's too bad, I loved his beefy frame, but he's not silver by any stretch of the imagination, so he won't work for my birchen and blue group. At least there is one birchen who will be staying too, so looks like I'll be keeping two of five of the green fire cockerels to add to my breeding pool. Jack's chicks aren't old enough to comment on much yet, they are a month old now and rather feral currently, since Coco, ladybird the turkey hen, and Pinky Pie are raising the 14 of them as a community. Luckily in this situation, with Coco's high flock standing, the chicks are already fully integrated into the main flock with very little harassment. So far, these chicks look like typical birchens for their age with nothing outstanding to me yet.

One of my hens was broody so I let her have some eggs. Three eggs tried to hatch, one succeeded. Two could not get out of the shells. I think she abandoned the nest when the first chick hatched. I recently read that the increased calcium in layers feed is the problem. I am going to stop feeding laying feed. They really don't eat that much feed though. Free ranging bug eaters! I think it is a cockerel. Have thought so from day one. If it is a cockerel it is not a slow feathering one and that is how my line tends to be. Everything about him is male!
@Chooks man I believe you will like his dusty color, not sure about all the white, his eye color is what you like to see. 9 days old

Here is a few pictures of my FBCM pullet @ about 20 weeks. Not in a breeding program just a pet. Posted pictures of her as a chick. Not laying yet and is the top of the pecking order in my flock of 7. She is standoffish but not mean. Just for my own education, how does she look? IMG_0023.JPG
