International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man - I have a question for you, I am asking because I have FRF birds too, as a matter of fact all my birds are FRF. These FRF birds are a cross between the Greenfire and Little Peddler lines. That makes my FRF birds a total outcross. That outcross produced better birds than the parents but it is still an outcross. If I take them to a different line that would be two generations of outcross. So should I take Woodrow (Antonio son) back to my hens next?

@RedBanks
here what happen when we out cross the line .
we get a F1 progeny . they will inherit half of they genes from mama hen and the other half from they father .this will be they genotype ( genome -arrangement of they gene s )
they phenotype ( physical appearance ) will be based on the dominant affect . the dominant gene will show up ,regardless if is from the Sire or the Dam .
it is called Hybrid Vigor . like your chooks .are big ,solid and well built .

what happen if we only work with this F1 progeny without introducing any thing else ?
F1 X F1 = F2 .this progeny will be very diverse .they will not look a like because the genes this time will arrange them selves in different manner NOT based on dominance but instead will be based on attraction . MEAN . the dominant genes will group together @ the rate of 25% and the recessive one will group together as well at the rate of 25%
the rest of 50% will be split ,carriers of both genes

in you case = Woodrow could be from the dominant genes combination .or the recessive genes or from the last combination

the F2 progeny is the only one we need to hatch as much as we can ,because of the genetic variation .
the other progeny F1 /F3 etc..... we need to hatch a small number

Antonio and his hens will produce the F2 progeny .you ll be amazed about the variation they ll throw . all sort of marans

the black copper cockerel on far back standing is from different line .
he is a son of Djabel over Bella a BLCM hen . him and his brothers are big solid chooks .plus they mother lay the darkest egg too

the dark silver cuckoo cockerel on the front is a out cross between Charlie a silver cuckoo Roo over Copenhagen a Birchen hen .he is a true dark cuckoo silver based not like the other cockerels silver over copper .
he is a solid big boy .hybrid vigor

They are handsome birds!

I like him a lot .great body type and well put together
he is going to be well colored rooster the tail angle look good .the feathers are growing on the right direction

give your cockerel time to grow .
I think you culling too early

cockerel like this one should be evaluated at 6/7 month old or even a year old to see his true form .

his comb need work

Thank you Chooksman! Im glad you think he has potential. The only thing I have really culled birds early for so far have been vulture hocks and excess parasitic white in my LA line of birds. A couple I culled at around 6 months old due to very high tails and horrible type (also LA birds).

I have not culled any FRF, or FRF x LA birds. They are a rough looking bunch aside from these two cockerels so far. But I plan on growing them all out. :)

You are so sweet. I missed you too!

He has a lot going for him. Is he FRF X LA?

He is pure FRF. Mud is his father over my FRF hen, who is my darkest layer by a long shot. Here is a pic of some eggs I washed. You can easily pick the FRF hens eggs out.. very dark. The other Marans eggs are from my LA hens.

the problem we are having with ours chooks is .they are not stable like the LP line has been in isolation for so long .
ours chooks will throw a lot mixture .inheritance disorder .

we need to breed them true by selective breeding

I would love to see your hens - I was getting ready to write about my hens and realized I can't write anything until this molt is over because they look so bad. The hens that have the 90 degree tails are also the smallest hens with the thinnest tails. I did notice today that Antonio has started to look pretty good. Do you have two FRF hens?

I just have the one original FRF hen, and her tail is high and fan like. Most of her pure FRF daughters look like they will inherit a similar tail, with the exception of my youngest FRF pullet who doesnt have much of a tail yet. That pullet also has very dark eyes. Which is wierd because Mud and the FRF hen have good eye color. I have maybe 3-4 pure FRF pullets. It was a rough year for raising birds.

very very nice .
find your best dark egg layer get a cockerel from her to start her line before she get too old .
lock the dark egg gene first than move to other trait later .

Thank you! I am so glad I am on the right "page". That is exactly what I was planning to do. I need more pullets who lay dark eggs just like the hen! :D

I like this one too .
2 different type cockerels . they compliment each other . if mated to the same hens

let this 2 grow up and see how they ll look around 6 months of age .

Thank you! I am thrilled to hear all my hard work hasnt been a total bust. Another breeder friend of mine said a person is lucky to get 1 out of every 9 birds that ends up being a decent keeper Marans to use for breeding. It is very challenging.
