International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well. That was a shock!
I put the first Rooster in with the pullers last night. I went out late this morning and he was dead. Wonder if he had a heart attack from being sooo excited with all the ladies??
Oh no..... so sorry.

Redbanks!! How I have missed you!! Hope you are doing well!!

But yes they have very high tails. It doesnt look like I will have many (if any) keepers out of my FRF cockerels I raised. Most have pretty high upright tails and a lot of copper leakage and shafting on the chest. They are still young so I will continue to let them grow. This is probably the "best" one but his tail will only get higher I expect. And yes he is on my kitchen table in most of the pics! I like this one too .
2 different type cockerels . they compliment each other . if mated to the same hens

let this 2 grow up and see how they ll look around 6 months of age .

Sooo cute! I bet he will be spectacular when he grows up. He is the beautiful Antonio's son after all. Looking forward to seeing pics as this little one grows! :love

Thank you Kayla! It will be interesting! I will post pics of Antonio and the girls when they don't look so bad and of course pics of Woodrow.

High tails in my FRF birds, high tails in my LA birds. I will have to work hard, and cull even harder to get those tail angles down. I will get out and try to get pics of my FRF pullets I raised as soon as I can. :)

I would love to see your hens - I was getting ready to write about my hens and realized I can't write anything until this molt is over because they look so bad. The hens that have the 90 degree tails are also the smallest hens with the thinnest tails. I did notice today that Antonio has started to look pretty good. Do you have two FRF hens?

You are so sweet. I missed you too!

He has a lot going for him. Is he FRF X LA?

@Chooks man - I have a question for you, I am asking because I have FRF birds too, as a matter of fact all my birds are FRF. These FRF birds are a cross between the Greenfire and Little Peddler lines. That makes my FRF birds a total outcross. That outcross produced better birds than the parents but it is still an outcross. If I take them to a different line that would be two generations of outcross. So should I take Woodrow (Antonio son) back to my hens next?

you don t need to out cross any thing RedBank .
you have 9 hens and 1 gorgeous rooster ,you have a type ,hackle color ,shanks feathers .good colored eggs .
what you need to do is hatch chicks 10 out of each hen ( total of 90 /100 ) and see the how many different type ofchicks you ll get .
you ll be amazed about how much variation your chooks will throw . a lot to chose from

Because you chooks are F1 outcross they will throw an F2 generation .a lot variation .

SP Woodrow is too young to count him for breeding yet .
After this molt hatch some chicks please .

for me last breeding season I worked with a Zambezi over 6 BCM hens and I hatched over 120 chicks from them .
I m amazed about the variation I got .
some hens produced great type pullet but not cockerel
others produced great type on both but with many other fault ( White ears lobe . absence of the red shoulders ..etc.......

all the cockerel I m keeping are from Norway all the others are going to the pot ( half of them all ready going )
So Norway is going to be identify as Dam of sires EX95

a pullets I ll keep the best type .hackle marking and dark egg layer regardless witch hens they come from

a lot people this day talk about culling but no many of them talk about hatching and razing chooks tell they are at leat 6 months old .THAT IS A SECRET . not working with a perfect chooks .

chooks man.

if I have Antonio and Gabby I ll hatch 50 chicks minimum from them at least . they are close to greatness .

let Woodrow grow up with his father ,so you can pen them together with the hens .
I did a same thing with Zambezi and his son Norambezi . now they are penned with 9 hens ( 5 BLC and 4 BC ) .this way I get better genetic diversity and save my self building other breeding pen .
I know all my hens eggs ,had them for a long time

here some photos of a Zambezi and Norambezi with they 9 hens
P1060965.JPG
P1060969.JPG

Zambezi Left has a better tail than his son
his son Norambezi Right. better comb than his father no double point ( Zambezi has a double point )

this penned is put together to produce type and reinforce the dark egg gene . not for the body color pattern . I ll use different rooster over the same hens
most of the eggs produced from this pen is going to be shipped to people who already placed a order . they are after dark egg layer not show chooks .

my youngest pullets 5 month old now

the black copper cockerel on far back standing is from different line .
he is a son of Djabel over Bella a BLCM hen . him and his brothers are big solid chooks .plus they mother lay the darkest egg too

the dark silver cuckoo cockerel on the front is a out cross between Charlie a silver cuckoo Roo over Copenhagen a Birchen hen .he is a true dark cuckoo silver based not like the other cockerels silver over copper .
he is a solid big boy .hybrid vigor
