International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I was able to get a close up shot of one of my pullets. This one likes to hang out on the back porch a lot and eat the cat's food. I can tell her apart because of those brownish eyes and her sweet nature. Gotta love the laid back temperament of Marans. <3

I picked out two pullets to pen up to use as breeders. Both are Mud (FRF) x LA. I wanted to go ahead and get them caught up to keep anything from happening to them. I am losing one here and there so I didnt want to chance losing these.

This is #12.

And this is #8

Both have the best type and tail angle of the bunch. #8 has darker eyes but other than that I am really looking forward to seeing what they throw.

Oh and I penned up my best blue copper pullet. Almost forgot about her.

you made the write chose .
both are stunning . great type and every thing else .
dark eyes are easy to fix .

I spent all the day building a new pullets pen for my youngest ones .they are coming to lay and they are running around all over the place .
tomorrow by lunch time should be ready for to house them .
the hens house is 3 meter long . 2.2 m wide and 1.8 m high
the run is 50 m long and 15m wide 3 row of fruit trees . plenty shade for them

This looks like a quick coop. Are the boards 1X? I think maybe 2x2. Don't know what you call them. Looks great. I really like the platform for a ladder.

Thanks Chooksman! Glad you approve. I have one or two more im watching but they look like they will have higher tails when they reach point of lay.

I may end up breeding those two black copper pullets to their full brother, my FRF x LA cockerel. I posted a couple pics of him the other day. He has the best tail angle and type of the cockerels Ive raised. I will also be single mating him to his blue copper half sister. I dont normally like breeding full siblings, but I think they would really throw some nice offspring. I will single mate him to each of his sisters so I can then mate nephew/aunt, son/mother, etc with their offspring.

So my FRF x LA birds are my F1. Their offspring will be F2 I will back cross to the original parent stock to make F3. I will then continue to line breed them to maintain the line, hopefully getting decent egg color.

I can use the LA line of birds when needed to improve or correct the FRF x LA line and vice versa.

Looks great! You have quite a hand for building. I really like that design.

We are going to have to get to work on building also. I need several smaller 4x4 holding pens to keep my extra spare roosters (Legbars and Marans).

my friend is a builder ,plus he has all the tools we needed for the job .I just gave him a hand here and there .
it is a simple design 2X3 timber frame with colored zinc sheet .plus few clear one to allow more light into the coop . build under a big pine tree . a lot shade .
by tomorrow will be finished .and night time I ll move them there .

sorry try to say you did the right thing not write thing .too many things in my mind .

any way .
brother and sister chooks from the out cross mating ( as F1 ) are in no danger to be bred together to get the pure F2 .
brother/sister chooks from like breeding is a different story . better half brother /half sister when we work on line breeding .

F2 are the best and the most diverse . wider genetic expression than all the other generation F1, F3 etc...........

your best chance to find the sublime chooks will be from the F2 . the one with both great parent stock traits FRF and LP .

I really like Antonio's son. I will post pictures when I get the chance. Still trying to catch up from a week with no power (electric and opportunity). Chooks man love all the pictures you post. I love to see beautiful Marans..... yours and everyone elses. Kfelton0002, it is good to see the new line you are working on. FRF X LA. I haven't talked to FRF in a long time, I will have to see what she is up to. Chickengr how are things going for you? Where is Keith?
