International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I follow the Chooks man's way....... wait...... I would not have kept Antonio at first, my other cockerels looked better to me but Chooks man made me do critiques by the book and I learned a little about what I should look for. Not fault finding, all of us can find faults, but looking beyond that to the overall bird. The cockerels I loved in the beginning slowly fell apart and Antonio slowly came together. So many things can be fixed. We are learning how to guide our program, learning to select the right stock, how to match them up to fix problems and improve what we have.

Speaking of Antonio, he is starting to get his feathers back. Antonio likes to have his picture taken.

chooksman, if Magpie is a cockerel I will be on cloud nine!!!! :weeI wanted to be able to keep my LP line pure, but I could never get a cockerel to hatch. That is why I went and bought Zorro. Magepie is nine weeks old today. I thought it strange that a pullet would be getting copper in those places, but I thought we had deemed her a little pullet in the beginning. I will get a better side view with the head included tomorrow when it is light again. I have added again the 6 week old Magpie and the hatchling Magpie photographs.

Oh yeah at 9 weeks old a pullet would not have that big bright red comb so young. Pullet combs start getting big and red as they near point of lay around 5 to 6 months old. And males take a while to develop their copper color. My Marans are pretty slow to mature and the males take a while to start coppering up. They can take up to a year to fully develop their full potential copper color. Congrats on Magpie being a cockerel! LP is an excellent line of BCM. :)

Thank you kfelton0002, I am excited to watch the transformation. I am learning a lot with these new marans. It has been fun watching them change. I do like the LP line. I am a little disappointed with egg color though. Just something I will have to work on.

You're welcome! :) How is their egg color? I figured LP birds would have good egg color.

I was able to get a close up shot of one of my pullets. This one likes to hang out on the back porch a lot and eat the cat's food. I can tell her apart because of those brownish eyes and her sweet nature. Gotta love the laid back temperament of Marans. <3

I picked out two pullets to pen up to use as breeders. Both are Mud (FRF) x LA. I wanted to go ahead and get them caught up to keep anything from happening to them. I am losing one here and there so I didnt want to chance losing these.

This is #12.

And this is #8

Both have the best type and tail angle of the bunch. #8 has darker eyes but other than that I am really looking forward to seeing what they throw.

Oh and I penned up my best blue copper pullet. Almost forgot about her.

Cat food is the bane of my existence. I have to feed the cats before I let the chickens out so the cats actually get to eat their food. I can't leave it out all day because the chickens eat it. I can't leave it out all night because the opossums come every night to eat it. My sisters three dogs (all well fed) come to my house to eat the cat food. My dog only wants to eat cat food, he prefers it over his food. The cats are nibblers and just want to eat a little at a time so they always seem hungry. The worst part is the chickens stay on my porch and make it a mess because they are looking for you guessed it cat food.

She is a cutey. My favorite thing about Marans is how quiet they are, they just do that murmuring thing. I love to hear them, they just talk and talk, it sounds to me like they are asking questions.

Love the pullets. Looks like things are falling into place for you.

Thank you! I am hopefully taking a step in the forward direction with them. Its been a struggle. I will have a lot of Marans pullets for layers that didnt make the cut for breeding.

I hear you about the messes on the porch. Lol. Such is life with chickens. That is hillarious about the opossums eating the cat food. Luckily our dogs must keep the opossums and ground dwelling varmints away. I think Ive only seen one opossum since we've lived on our property. I suspect owls or hawks are the culprits for picking off two of my smaller FRF pullets. No carcasses or signs of an attack. Whatever it is takes the whole bird. :(
