International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I dont like to breed mean roosters, but sometimes will make an exception. Chooks man is more eperienced with marans and has a better eye. I am still fine tuning my "eye". ;) But if Chester ends up mean, that is definitely a mark in the con column in my opinion.

Oh and the pic didnt show up on your post.

if you want to raise a gentle cockerel ,you need to pen hm with the older hens .they ll put him in his place and teach him manner .

my ex #1 cull, now might be #1 breeder (we shall see after molting):

behind him you can see his sister with the best hackles. her comb is bad though.

my other keeper:

his comb still makes me cry but his body shape and mass are good. we shall see his true colour later. his sweet character makes me want to keep him forever.

I am not sure if the bottom of his hackles are gold or light copper.

:) I've had them in with the big girls and roo since 6 weeks when mama weened them. I wouldn't say he is mean. Just seems protective of the rest of the flock. These three babies haven't been handled - I let broody do all the work. My Cochin roo wasn't handled either. Just had to learn to trust me. I think I just need to spend more time in there.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm keeping Chester and will find him some good BCM ladies in the spring. I can't wait!

Hold your horse .you are going to cull no body . because o some little brown feathers .
give him a time to fully feathers up .
never rush the thing if you want to breed a good chooks .

post photos of him please.
i do like the marking on those chicks . I do no see any wheaten on them .

chooks man
No worries chooks man! I wouldn't cull without your expert analysis first. And I will definitely let them grow and fully feather out. I will get pics of Jazz tomorrow and post them. Maybe you can look and give me some sort of idea as to what may have caused them. I feel like my pullets from LP are the real deal, but with Zorro I just don't know. He visually looks like a BCM, but I was just wondering if he could possibly be crossed with something he shouldn't be, and it is showing up in his progeny.

Sue need special hens to be mated to and a lot progeny to be hatched too if you want to use him over a BCM hens .
he has few good thing .but they are not sex linked . they can passed down from the Dam
what he is lucking is a sex linked trait we need rom the rooster to produce nice /correct progeny ,because they sire more then the hens .

HERE WHAT WE NEED ROM THE COCKEREL /ROOSTER . the things they need to excel on
1) eye color ( bright orange)
2) lovely body marking ( hackle .saddle and lancet) and type of color
3) body color.
4) correct tail
5)Ears tuft ( coppery colored similar to the hackle)
6) shoulder marking

Chester ; can cover any hen BCM /BLCM and SPCM .
any thing he is missing could corrected by the hens. like mass . that all what he lucks .

if we want to increase the size o the chooks than we have to select a biggest hens
if we want a colorful chooks than we have to select the most colorful Rooster

chooks man
Thank you for the explanation! Will put this in my notes.

never cull young birds!

I am very happy I didn't cull my boys as they had catastrophic combs. somehow miracle happened and their combs got fixed.

can you post pics of those brown feathers? chickens molt out many weird things. my over coloured girl looks like well marked now.

No worries! I will hold on to them and see how they mature out. Thank you!
