International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

This is the only cockerel I see, of course, I am not looking at them head on. It is just like anything else, buy an expensive dog and it is always at the vet etc. get a mutt and they seem to be invincible. Ended up smiling looking at the pic with the colorful chicken towel backdrop. We will give that chicken photographer a run for her money!:lau

this one is screaming: I am a boy!

Here are the 4 others.. they are very active and vigorous. Ignore the little Cream Legbar cockerel in some of the pictures. He was the only Legbar egg I had at the time when I set the Marans eggs so I threw it in with them. Of course it hatched to be a cockerel, such is my luck. He cried his head off when I took the Marans for their photo shoot and left him by himself so I let him tag along. I used a dish towel as a back drop.
:jumpy

They have minimal white on their faces and their hatch down looks good to me. The one with the red band was from the group of darkest eggs and has barely any white at all on its face. The chicks with the blue bands are from the big hen with the dark hackle @RedBanks. The chick with no band was from the 3rd group of eggs. I will take pics of the eggshells also and I will wing band these shortly, but put the zip ties on them to mark which eggs they came from. They are a cute little bunch and I am very happy with them. :D

Sue went off to his new harem today. Lucky fella is off to one heck of a chicken palace. A chicken mansion really. Could be one of the nicest setups I've seen yet. Now I just need to find a couple of ladies for Chester. There isn't anyone in the New Hampshire / Vermont area that I have found with fbcms. I may have to wait till spring for a broody to set. If you have any ideas (not incubating) please share! Thank you all for all your knowledge and tips so far!

Your best bet would be getting some chicks or a few pullets from someone and having them shipped . I am not NPIP certified yet or I could send you some chicks in the spring. You have to be NPIP certified to ship live poultry. I am still trying to figure out what I have to do to get my birds tested for my NPIP certification. You could get a small Hovabator Genesis or similar incubator and get some hatching eggs. Incubating isn't difficult when you have a good incubator.
