International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Maximus and his two ladies seem to like their new love shack. The feathers you see on the ground in the pen with all that white are old feathers from our Game chickens that were inside the next box. These bugger heads went in the nest and scratched all the straw out as they investigated their new pen. I had to drill a piece of wood to the front of the nest to hold the straw in better. Maximus's comb is a little banged up from pacing the wire because he wanted to get back to his harem in the next pen.

That ugly tall point on Maximus's comb though.. GRRR! I just want to snip it off with a pair of scissors! :barnie (But I won't) I'm just a tad bit OCD. :p

Your best bet would be getting some chicks or a few pullets from someone and having them shipped . I am not NPIP certified yet or I could send you some chicks in the spring. You have to be NPIP certified to ship live poultry. I am still trying to figure out what I have to do to get my birds tested for my NPIP certification. You could get a small Hovabator Genesis or similar incubator and get some hatching eggs. Incubating isn't difficult when you have a good incubator.

I've seen your flock and I want some I'm hoping my cuckoo who was such a stubborn broody and kept her babies for 7 weeks goes broody in the spring. I'd rather not deal with incubators. Don't go on hiatus!

We will try to coordinate and make that happen then. Hopefully my girls are laying well when your Cuckoo goes broody. :)

It is difficult to capture in a photograph just how big Maximus truly is. He is a big guy. His back is broad and he feels solid and hefty when you get him in your hands. One of the pics I just posted for some reason made his earlobe look white, but it isn't. Here are a couple more pics that I took on my phone today.

Maximus needs more depth to his breast and a longer back/lower tail, a better comb.. a work in progress indeed.

More bad pictures of the Antonio cockerel. 13 weeks. I can't get this bird to stand still. His tail is so long but he never carries any higher than this.View attachment 1184448 View attachment 1184449

Go get him off the roost and bring him in to the kitchen counter! ;)

Aside from his long tail, I don't see anything that stands out as wrong at this point. If he holds his tail at a good angle as he matures he may be an asset to you in the spring. His back is nice and long and gently sloped to the tail as it should be. His leg color is lovely, leg feathering also. He looks to be filling out more. Give him time. These Marans boys take so long to show their true colors. If you give up on him this soon, you may truly be throwing out a gem. I would have never picked Maximus as a breeder at this age, but he blossomed into one of the best cockerels I've raised. If he were mine, he'd be sticking around. They don't call me the crazy chicken lady for nothing! :p

I can tell ,he is huge and handsome .love his copper .
agree with you in what he need .
a good thing is ,all what he need are not sex linked trait .they could be fixed by the hen .
you selected well for him .fingers cross .

if you keep this seriousness and the dedication you have now for the marans ,you ll end up with one of the best bred BCM line in there .
my hat to you my friend

That means so much to me! Thank you! :hugs I have a passion for the breed and I don't see that passion burning out anytime soon. I aspire to breed birds that will win ribbons at poultry shows, as close to perfect as I can get them. That is my dream. And without a good teacher, I wouldn't know squat.
