International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

don t rush the thing s up .do not incubate the pullets eggs if they are under 65g .very ,very important when we work with the marans breed .other wise the mass will safer .smaller chooks .

my oldest pullet are 10 /11 months old ,they eggs are not as dark as they where in the start but the weight of them is correct for the breed ,65/70g .
now I m penning ,one month and I start incubating they eggs ,by the time the chicks hatch ,they Dams will be a year old .

I'm not setting any until they are bigger. Queen's first egg weighed 54 grams, not bad for a first egg. My grandma loves eating my Marans eggs, so I will send it to her in her dozen. :)

congrats! my pullets start with lighter colour and about 37 grams. the 2nd egg usually is 39-40 gr, the next 45 gr... the 5th egg looks as dark as your 1st. lucky you!

They're all different. Some of my pullets start with really small lighter or speckled eggs that gradually get bigger and darker. Marans eggs are like fingerprints, and I've not seen two of my girls lay eggs that look exactly the same. They all have their own unique characteristics specific to the hen that laid them.

For example, one of my original LA hens lays eggs with big lovely dark spots and speckles. I can always pick her eggs out of a community nest when they free-range because they are unique. Her sister lays an egg that is smooth as satin, rich and even in color (my #60 hen). Her other sister lays a huge jumbo egg that is the biggest of any hen I have.

Collecting Marans eggs never gets boring and I get a thrill each and every time a pullet starts laying for the first time. Everyone needs this kind of excitement in their lives. :D

One of my pullets still free ranging. She is from the LA line. Big pullet with a nice short tail and long back. She has brown eyes and the blade of her comb looks notched/split but she is looking good otherwise. The white in her wing should molt out. I think this one will go in a breeding pen too. :)

Thanks! She's big.. probably one of the biggest. Fat bottomed girls make this rockin world go round!

if you pair her to the right cockerel ,she ll yield very heavy ,solidly build progeny .

her mate need to have a great comb
gorgeous eyes
well tight body plumage -free from any fluff-

I think you have theis type of cockerel.
