International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

But your bad combs have minor flaws..... no disqualifying problems do they?

Yeah a lot of my birds have double points (points make an M). Apollo has a double point. My favorite LA hen has an S shaped comb, Griffin has an S shaped comb, and Ive noticed a few of Apollo and #60's offspring have S shaped combs and double points. They are definitely hereditary traits and disqualify birds in show.

I can't pick out a good chick.... I don't know enough. I have to wait until they are about 2.;)

Apparently I cant either. I wouldnt have Maximus if I culled him when I wanted to. While my neighbor and I were processing her orpingtons I came very close to processing Maximus! How horrible would that have been? He is now my favorite male. Even my husband tells me how pretty he is and helps me move his highness back and forth between Queen/Lucille and #8's pen. Maximus was an ugly and awkward looking youngster that never had a tail. After that he started filling out, his tail came in and he blossomed. That taught me a major lesson to leave them be and wait. :)

you are alright .they are hereditary traits and disqualify birds in show .
it is a reason why we have to balance this faults out in ours breeding pens .by choosing at least on breeders who hasn t got the fault .

any fault or quality we see in ours chooks are not 100% hereditary because we are working with a outcross strains .the Fault and the quality are not bred true .just combination after combination .from too many outcross .

if we are working with a stable line .like the LP line than will be different story .we are not there yet .

When people come to my house they just oooo and ahhh over Antonio, to non Marans people he is very impressive.

even for the marans people he still impressive ,just has few faults that all .but he is not lucking the CLASS and ELEGANCE .

Antonio s is going to be remembered one day as a supreme sire of your BCM line .so he better be impressive .

some time RedBanks is not how the chooks looks what important in the breeding pen ,but they ability to correct or to reinforce the good traits ( from mama hen)in they future progeny .
Breeder bird is it totally different to the show bird .
the show bird has to look good that all .but the breeder bird has to deliver the good year in year out .performance and predictability .
