here the photo of the cover page of the book .
we can see how the marans rooster comb should look like by the French SOP .
not too big neither small . not arched .straight and long ,well lifted from the back ( Lobe)
the upper part of the blade of the comb( the start of the point) and the lower part of the base and the lobe are parallel .almost straight line .not arched

I would love to have that book if only I could read French. Lol

he will trust me on this one .
comb can be fixed by both parents any way .

try to hatch pullets from this paring and mate them back to they sire Gideon to reinforce the good comb traits .

but really to fix the comb problem in your flock ,you need to mate Gideon to your pullets or hens with a best comb to start a comb line .

Sounds like a good plan. :)

I guess the reason I struggle with combs so much is because I've never had to worry about combs before. I have been working on several lines of Old English Game for exhibition and their SOP requires dubbed combs, wattles, and earlobes. An undubbed male is a disqualification. You don't have to worry about a split lobe or too many or too few points on a comb when you are going to be trimming it off.

Spangled Old English Game is one line I am working on. I am also working on Crele, Silver Duckwing, and Wheaten. Very beautiful birds. :love

I want good combs too but when I think of them in terms of points, they count for very little in the show world.

I don't think I have ever seen a Marans comb that looked like one of these!

Don t forget the bad comb ( side sprig ,double points .coronation comb .short lobe etc.... can get the bird disqualify .

the show is all about the beauty not the productivity .

as a breeder the beauty came last .the productivity and the functionality of the bird is more important . body type .dark large egg 150 minimum a year .straight and strong legs . great mass .health and vigor .

it is nice to have a faultless marans chooks .they are so pretty and well refined .
