Forgot to attach the pics of my cockerel with the growth on his beak.

I had a young cockerel with the same. I thought it was an injury from a fight but maybe not.

The sun sets by 430 now, so in the winter afternoon, everything has a bit of yellow tint, however, this lovely pullet was hatched in late June and is one of Jack's daughters. I will post some more pictures of these during the day on the weekend when there isn't so much yellow from the setting sun.

The cockerels in that group dont appear to fight and even get along well enough with the young games running with them. I have had plenty of birds injured in fights and have never seen this type of growth. It stumps me but I am going to try to dig up some info on it.

You're welcome! I didnt either until today. Apparently there are many genetic defects that plague the breed. We just have to be responsible and cull hard any unfit birds from the breeding pen.

Interesting. I just assumed it was from fighting. I never noticed it until he was worked over pretty good and I was checking his head and comb for damages. It looks to be something with BCMs. Maybe chooksman will know more.

This is the solitary survivor from the doghouse nest fiasco over Thanksgiving, along with her mother. If she develops a hackle like her mom, I would be very pleased, although I am still sad that all 12 of the other chicks died.

It looks to be very common in BCM's but not only in BCM's. I saw posts concerning other breeds as well, just like syndactyly can affect many feather legged breeds. This is why as breeders it so important we look over every inch of our birds to look for defects.. split wing, split tail, side sprigs, crooked keels, and so on so we can remove birds with such problems to keep them from carrying it forward.
