International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I know. I've weighed the eggs, they're around 55 g right now. This is just a test hatch to check fertility. I'm not overly concerned about low mass at the moment. Babies will be eating game bird feed since they'll be sharing a brooder so the extra protien should help them grow.

nothing wrong by hatching them just to check the fertility as long as you don t breed from them .

best luck

Do you know what this is?

I have seen a lot of this sort of a infection , because my chooks are free ranging with a wild birds ( native parrots ). my Vet hasn got a names for most of them .
if it is not solid and well attached like a tumor do ,he said don t to worry about it . Antibiotic will do .
we are not with ours chooks 24/7 .we don t know what they get up to when we are not watching .

more chicks still hatching day 22 ended .
32 out, couple more on the way .out of 56 eggs .

the best thing is I got a chick that hatched from Channel my Silver cuckoo hen ( my Avatar ) this chick is a pure double barred almost grey like they should be ( he is a boy) he is a Son and the Grand son of channel . his Sire Saharacas is a son of Charlie over Bella . Charlie is a son of Channel .
this little fella is bred for a dark large eggs and big body type for 4 generation
his female family line are all large dark eggs layer .Cleo the first hen I start with .big hen .large egg 5/6 .her daughter Channel , big type .large dark egg 6/7 . Bella .Saharacas mom ,big chooks ,large dark egg 6/7.
his Male side = Charlie ( Uk import ) not a great looking rooster , dark large egg 8. his son Chinatown . Big boy . large dark egg 6 . Charlie#2 correct and handsome big boy ,large dark egg 7. Saharakas . big boy large dark egg 7 .
He doesn t know all this thing .he think he is just like the rest .just a little chick .
Charlie#4 I post photos of him and the rest tomorrow ,when they are all dry and fluffy .
2 females chicks his sisters and cousin in the same time hatched as well .they are from Cheetah . a sister to Channel .
this 3 chicks if they survive and mature ,they will be mated together to form they own pure line for ever as long as I ll have a chooks . nothing will be added to they progeny . they have enough genetic diversity to keep them going as long as I do my home work.

I ll be hatching more of those .I need a lot to be safe .

more good news .
Hatched some pure dominant white ( still one copy) . I managed to split them from the splash ,witch was confusing . because both they hatch white with a black dot .

those are from my best hen Sari . great type and large dark eggs .Splash/Dominant white .and they Sire is a Spotted Rhino ,S/GC .they are big plum chicks . happy with this pairing .more chicks going to hatch .

I start to understand how to work with my chooks now .I had them sort out . took me a little will . they come from different stock ,from all over the country .
now they start to perform they way they should be .from now on will be fun .
Isolating the genes and breed them true.

photos tomorrow

Wow that sounds amazing! I love hearing all the backstory and the line history. Like a pedigree. Cant wait to see them! :D

yes it is a pedigree breeding .

this sort of breeding is hard when we start and become easier as we go along with it .as long as we keep note of all the breeders we are using in the program .

I spend a lot time doing the papers work of my chooks .all have names /day of birth / known parents etc...............

love this sort of work . I found it fascinating .

some photos of a little ones .the one are all ready dried and moving around .the rest still in they hatcher .
I use 2 hatcher .1 to actually hatch the eggs and the other is for the chicks to dry out . I found this way my hatcher with the eggs stay cleaner and the hatched chicks will not interfere with the rest of the eggs .no stress by been moved around.

I m getting a lion instead of the dog this year my friend .hahahaaaaaaaaaaa

my dogs now are a good friend with a chooks .they got it finally and they are doing a great ob .well pleased .

this breeding season I m doing it differently . I ll not mix the hatchling .each group will stay separated from the others . more brooders and pens but I think it s worth the effort . better for the chicks health and well been when they are with they hatch mate a same age .
