International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Got a picture of my oldest cockerel from Apollo and Sheraz (#60). High tail.. but otherwise he is a nice looking bird. He is about 6 to 6.5 months old. I might just be taking this boy to the show next month. :)

He looks a lot like his sire.

Does the cockerel have black mixed into the saddle Feathers? And should he have more copper on the shoulder? Apollo is a very nice looking roo :)

He is still young and has a lot of coloring up to do. I have found that Marans are very slow to mature and dont reach their full color potential until 10-12 months old. His brothers that are a 1-2 months younger still have a lot of black.

Ok. We have 2 10 month cockerels and 1 8/9 month cockerel. Should we expect any color darkening/lightening or no?
We are trying to figure out our breeding stock.

I will take a picture of Apollo now and you can see the any difference as they get older. He was approximately 8 months old or so in that picture I posted earlier. He is around 14-15 months old now. The copper shouldn't really lighten or darken, but more usually comes in as the birds mature.

This is the best shot I could get of Apollo. I couldnt get a good pic at all of him out in the run.

He got a little frost bitten on the back of his comb but not bad enough to dub. He also doesnt normally look that "squirrel tailed" but he was aggravated thinking I was bothing his hens.
