International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Every breed has some part of the standard that is harder to reach. I think it is the comb with CLB. I had beautiful crests and terrible combs. I think a good crest pushes the comb into an S.

I agree. I think to have a better crest you will have a badly twisted comb and to get a better comb the crest will be smaller. As long as the crest is present and not too skimpy I would prefer for the comb to be straight and erect instead of twisted and lopped. The Legbars are another very challenging breed, like the Marans. But they are beautiful and I love them. :)

Good question! I have egg customers that tell me they find blood spots in the Marans eggs also. It grossed one customer totally out (non-country type folk). I know the brown pigment is made up of blood products and iron but the blood spots I find are actual blood and not brown. I just pick them out.. no biggie. Hens can have a ruptured capillary in their oviduct when their egg is being formed and blood just gets encapsulated inside the egg with the yolk. The blood and egg contents are sterile so it isnt pathogenic or anything.

But why more common in Marans eggs I wonder?

@RedBanks . I had a look and I find out that .they are saying a same thing as @kfelton0002 . BRAVO .
I did no know about it .
you learn some thing every day .

That is because you are always hatching eggs instead of eating them. Every time I eat a Marans egg I think..... what an expensive breakfast!;)

Thank you Chooks man, This was the worse hatch I ever had!!! All of the Marans eggs had chicks in them. I had a couple trying to hatch on day 26! I still ended up with only the 4. Temperature must have been way low. I am thinking of adding a full degree in temperature. Doing another test hatch and see how it goes. :(

Not the best picture but the best I could get.

Nice! Did you hatch them? I have some ordered. I can't wait to get them.
Indeed! From my own lines I'm working on! I'm very excited to see how they grow out, it's green fire x Reeves. Rodney Reeves is no longer breeding, he's retired his flock, but he had some really excellent hens, and crossing these two lines ( his has been in the US since the 1980s import group) has made for some very vigorous chunky chicks.
