International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Why are the Marans eggs full of blood spots? Are they blood spots or egg shell coating?

Good question! I have egg customers that tell me they find blood spots in the Marans eggs also. It grossed one customer totally out (non-country type folk). I know the brown pigment is made up of blood products and iron but the blood spots I find are actual blood and not brown. I just pick them out.. no biggie. Hens can have a ruptured capillary in their oviduct when their egg is being formed and blood just gets encapsulated inside the egg with the yolk. The blood and egg contents are sterile so it isnt pathogenic or anything.

But why more common in Marans eggs I wonder?

My eggs are streaked with brown not just a blood dot. I boiled a dozen this morning to make deviled eggs for my neighbor. The whites were full of brown streaks and didn't look appetizing so I made egg salad instead. I just cracked one open to take a picture for this post and of course no blood spot or brown streak. I will make sure to take a picture the next time. I have to say the funniest thing about me having chickens is I almost never eat eggs. Crazy! None of my other chickens ever had this coloring in the eggs, for the most part blood spots were rare..... with Marans it is a different story. The orange yolks are very strong and tasty..... sometimes too tasty for some recipes. I have made cakes and the egg taste comes thru very strong. The eggs are huge though so I have learned when a recipe calls for 2 large eggs, I crack the eggs in a measuring cup. A large egg is 1/4 cup, so.... 2 eggs equals 1/2 cup in the recipe.

@Chooks man

I want to tell you how much your words of encouragement mean to me. Sometimes I feel like just chucking it all..... but your compliments, advice and support keep me going. Thank you.

Don't get discouraged! You have gorgeous chickens! There will be bumps in the road but your stock is excellent. You have hens that could knock a judge's socks off in show. Those hens WILL produce superb offspring. Especially by mating to a nice cockerel like Tony2. Pen them up and keep them safe. Single mating is the key to hone in on certain traits and improve a line. Keep your chin up, your Marans are fantastic!

100% with you .
@RedBanks is only couple feet away from having great BCM line .

I started breeding a white marans with my Mother in the 70Th . I still remember the first white cockerel . I raise him as a pet .really looked after him tell he become a big rooster .her strain has a lot fault and where too badly inbred so she stop breeding them . from that time I thought one day I ll be old enough .have my own house I ll breed those white one and I ll fix all they fault .
here I m now. after over 40 years ,still struggling to breed those white magic marans chooks .Still have plenty of time ( I hope so) to deal with them .they are not going any where .
breeding chooks is a way of life .they is not time limit .always some thing to worry about .

@RedBanks .you have a great marans flock with just a couples of fault .tails and combs. both are Autossome no Sex linked . can be fixed by both hens or Roosters .the rest is sublime .

It doesn't bother me but has bothered some people that get my eggs. A LOT of people think a blood spot is the beginning of a chick. I assured them it is not and remind them even grocery store eggs have blood spots and there are no roosters in those hen houses.
