International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here is a cockerel I have my eye on. He does have a halo to his hackle and his comb isnt great but so far his tail angle is looking good and his breast isnt overcolored like most of his brothers. He is also off Apollo and Sheraz.

Here is my second favorite pullet. I had posted pics of her when she was younger but she didnt have a tail. She is just a tad bit mossy but that's okay because I think I will put my overmelanized Mashburn cockerel over her. Her comb is banged up because of all the cockerels free ranging.

please separate the cockerels from those gorgeous pullets .let them grow /mature properly .

lock the cockerel in one pen .no free ranging .they don t need it .they just cause troubles .end they meat get tough .no good for processing .

the cockerels should be separated from the pullets at 3/4 months old .
the pullets need to grow up separated from the cockerels/rooster tell they are 10 months old . if we want them to express they true genetic make up . those are slow maturing ,long lived chook breed

she is nice . her tail is little higher but her body type and hackle marking are stunning .

Agree with you she ll be good to go with your new dark cockerel .

what line she come from ?

I think she is actually a pullet I hatched from Mud x my line A pullets before he got sick, so she is a line C (FRF x LA).

he is nice too .thick and solid specimen . love his body color .10/10 .
I like his tail .good angle a little open and square ( good for you in the US where you are going to show).

Apollo and Shiraz carries a lot split genes .they are throwing all sort of type of tail .but they are Homozygous to the comb genes. will be hard to get a good comb from them very slim chance . this trait has to be added to them later .

I like this pairing .if they where mine I ll keep them together for life and I only pick they best progeny to breed from in the future.

good news .from different line .she could be mated to the cockerel from Apollo/Shiraz .to start a good tail line . those two will throw a lot progeny with a good tail French( thin/pointed ) and American(. square /open )

keep this pair well protected .let them mature without stress .

I was thinking about mating one of Sheraz's best sons back to her. Apollo has a horribly high tail and produces a lot of high tailed offspring. Only a few out of all of them have good tails. Sheraz put the back lenth in them they needed. Apollo is looking very squirrel tailed these days. What do u think?

very good point .
Back crossing to Shiraz will establish some true gene combination .

I am actually in the process of working on a bachelor pen for the cockerels. They are truly getting on my nerves the way they run the girls down and gang up on them. I came very close to butchering a few today but I want to wait for my neighbor. I am going to invest in a few new knives for butchering also so their time is coming. ;)

yeah tell me about it .the cockerels when they pass 4 months old they become a no sense creature .
I have a 100 of them 50 mature roosters and 50 young ones .they are happy in they pen ,some time they jump the fence and they go hang about outside the pullets pens .they don t jump in into the pullets pens .my worker think is funny . he said the roosters don t need free ranging or be spoiled .they only need to be caged by the pullets pens and they be happy .

the cockerels raised with the hens they mature to well mannered roosters .

Hello I have a small hatch of 6 FBCM eggs two are not due yet.
Is their a Way to sex them at hatching.

You can but it takes some practice. The females have black beaks and darker combs usually, the cockerels are bigger and have lighter beaks and combs. I will try to find pictures to show what I mean.
