International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My chicks will have cats for best friends. The cats have gotten inside with them but just sit there and watch them.

Eyes ; Ex
Neck ; long and strong
Back ; Ex flat .long
Tail ; Ex to die for . small /thin and pointed
Chest ; Ex Deep and meaty .
Wing ;Ex well tucked in .close to the body ,
Rear ; Ex .wide and low
Shanks/Feet ; Ex Short .feathered .thick /straight and spaced .
Hackle color; Ok ; need more copper .I like the type of the copper .rich red but not enough of it .

Watch out.. for real. Cats are carnivores and predators. They have a prey drive that is out of this world. Little scurrying baby chicks are sometimes just too hard to resist, to even the most well behaved cats. Ask me how I know this. lol

Thank you so much for your evaluation! I am so glad to hear you think she is going to make a good breeder. I may not crank out many quality breeders this year but if I get a few I'll be happy. :)

I lost one of my Blue Copper roosters today. I think it was Hulk. The one with the light grey under tones. Not sure why? I found no worms or mites. Gizzard was full with some grit inside. Crop had some grain inside. Head was dark and showed no signs of him being sick. I am wondering if he choked. That feed I buy can be like powder if they grind it too fine. :(

Oh I hate to hear that! It sucks to lose birds. And it's always the ones you don't want to lose. The ones you don't care if you lose or not will live forever. :(

My first attempt at wing banding. I do not have the strength or much use of my right hand. So my left hand is all I have to use. It is not enough strength to push band through. I did manage to do two of the chicks but feel bad for the babies. I do have a idea and I am going to try using a toe punch to give me a starter hole. What do you guys think?

Toe punch worked awsome! More precise and less likely to hit tendon. I just used the toe punch to make hole and put the little round part of the band through. Used special pliers for jiffy type wing bands to pinch the end. So much easier for me with one arm and hand that doesn't work well.
