International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My homemade chicken soup made with the Marans rooster I butchered turned out really good. The meat was very tender and falling off the bone. I had plenty of breast meat for the soup so I left the dark meat out separate for my husband since Im not a big fan of dark meat.

That looks great. I would like to tackle processing my birds but must be somewhere down the road just too busy. I see wonderful yellow chicken fat floating in there.:drool

Yes it was so yummy! My sister ate 2 bowls! :D Even my picky son ate some and said it was good. Homegrown chicken most definitely has more flavor than a store bought one. A chicken develops flavor as it lives, so one butchered at a young age doesn't have as much flavor as one that is older.

Most definitely try your hand at processing when you can. Have someone that knows how to do it show you how. It is very satisfying to know that even cull birds are not a waste of feed and time. They earn their keep in the tasty meat they bring to your table. They are well worth the work and effort of processing. :)

in some european countries people say: old hen - good soop!

I didn't want to eat the roo my friend gave me. I sold him. a fox didn't mind to eat it. I guess I have to accept that chickens are not supposed to live forever and start eating them.
