International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

There was no hope there. It took me two days to actually figure out what was wrong. I kept giving the poor thing a bath. The second day it didn't leave the water trough, just stood there drinking all day. No water was actually staying in his body. Again at first I didn't get it but every time I looked out there was that bird by the water. They are so stoic.

Sorry I have been so off topic. Have to get back to BCM. They can use some advice on the BCM thread.

Only in the roosters, but my experience with splash birds is limited. Ive never seen a splash hen with copper. I plan on mating blue copper x blue copper this summer/fall to hopefully produce a few splash pullets.
I wonder why that is, I've only seen one picture of splash copper roo showing copper and no hens. I wonder what the secret is, I feel a challange coming up.

Hello everyone! It was brought to my attention that I should post my qyesqueshere as well as the other Marans thread.

Will olive/green eyes on a 6 week old chick change to orange as they age? I think I have the answer now but I'm interested in more opinions.

Thank you in advance!

Green/grey/bluish eyes on a Marans chick will most definitely have correct eye color when the chicks mature, which is orange to reddish orange. The color you dont want to see as the birds mature are black or opal (white). Brown eyed birds can even be worked with, especially if the brown eyed birds are females and you mate them to a cock bird with good reddish orange eyes. Do not cull for eye color in baby chicks!! Eye color is such a small thing amongst all the bigger things you have to worry about when you're breeding Marans.

Join our group if you need advice anytime! We are all here for the same reason, because we love our chickens and we want to help one another. :)

Chickens develop their eye color as they mature. Wait until a bird is 6-8 months old to judge it. Its a lot of growing out but you dont want to potentially throw out some good birds for nit-picky things, like a brown eyed pullet that is exceptional otherwise. We can work on faults. Some people cull for this and for that very early but those same people crank out high volumes of chicks too so they can. I personally dont cull chicks because I like to see how they turn out. Even the ugly duckling ones can blossom and surprise you. I will cull chicks for deformities, lack of vigor, vulture hocks, etc but otherwise I give them all a shot and hope I turn out a few worth keeping for the next year. Just my 2 cents.

I concur.

Me too, and 100% agree #1 and 2 are excatly what i look for in a hatch down. But #1 is showing off for sure.

#1 still has hardly any wing feathers compared to the others who have nice long feathers. At a week old it's still looking like a couple days old. For some reason I thought darker face was a sign of girl but this one is very slow to feather - and is still the biggest of all 4. It's also my favorite so you know what that usually means.

Thanks everyone. This is what they look like now (hatched early March). I'm going to need some help narrowing down roosters from 6 to 2 in a few months. So I'll definitely stick around!
