International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Not my scene either. I was helping with a group of ladies and had to stop. I don't like being drawn into all the drama. Life is stressful enough without all that! Now us chicken people. We got each other's backs. We are a good bunch. We can and will talk chickens for hours.[/QUOTE
More like days. Im always doing something that involves chickens.

Has anyone ever really seen a splash showing good copper, ive never really seen a splash that has copper like the blacks and blues do. I was just curious if I'm the only one.

Only in the roosters, but my experience with splash birds is limited. Ive never seen a splash hen with copper. I plan on mating blue copper x blue copper this summer/fall to hopefully produce a few splash pullets.

For awhile there i thought i was the only young person with a passion for chickens, seeing as all my friends and peers look at me like I'm speaking in cling-on(star trek i believe) when i talk about chickens. But i see there's atleast a couple people here that younger also. It's good to know, are y'all also searching for the wisdom that only comes from time, from the people that have lived the years to gain it. If that makes any sense.

there is at least one 14 yo and 17 yo byc member. I met them in the other threads.

Busy and then some! But I love them, they bring me a lot of joy! There is always chicken drama and its amusing, but not always! Like today for example. I have one black copper cockerel from my blue copper line that has beautiful color and type so far.. just gorgeous tail angle and mass, all of it! I admire him everyday! Well today a gamecock grabbed him by the neck when the cockerel got too close at feeding time and as the cockerel struggled to get away the gamecock pulled a HUGE chunk of skin off the back of his neck! I mean actual flesh.. feathers, skin, everything! It was so horrible!! I hope he heals up, even if it will leave him permanently scarred. He is in a pen to himself so he can hopefully recover. I didn't have the heart to cull him. Poor little guy.. :hit

sorry to hear that but it will heal. I had worse cases (deep holes with puss as I didn't notice it on time) and within days flash and skin were back. it took some longer for the feathers. there is no scar at all.

you can give him some antibiotic as it will probably get infected. 3 days of (oxy)tetracycline, doxycycline, baytril or similar would be enough.

Bless her heart. I think I remember you telling me about that before. That really gives me hope he will get better. I know chickens are tough and resilient. What I worry about are flies blowing the wound and infection so I will keep antiseptic handy and he will get antibiotics if necessary. I decided to separate him from the rest because chickens love blood. That may sound gruesome but its the truth. When we dub or butcher birds and there is blood on the ground, they pick and pick at the blood like its a delicasy. When one chicken is bloody, they all converge and eat at the wound like piranhas. I felt he would be safer in solitary. Lol

from time to time I find some hens with fresh blood on there chests with no sign of any injury. it took too long before I saw them catching and eating sparrows.

I think my course of treatment for him will be silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) ointment to the wound, and if need be an antibiotic. Silvadene is an antimicrobial ointment and works well on large wounds or burns to promote healing and helps prevent infection. I am hoping to get some OTC tomorrow. We have water soluble tetracycline I can give him a course of.

He seemed fine when I checked on him before work. He ate and doesnt appear put off by his injury. Chickens are hardcore. We have had adult chickens survive horrible owl and dog attacks we thought for sure would die. I just worried about his neck being exposed with no skin but he literally acts like nothing happened.

I had a chicken with a ripped crop.... well not really ripped - gone! I didn't know it because it kept eating, drinking and walking around. What gave it away was his wet chest. Everything he ate and drank dribbled out onto his chest. Lavender Ameraucana.

Did you cull it or did it die on its own? Thats a really bad injury. Poor thing.. :(
