International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hi Braxton Bregade ;

I like your approach .no hybridizing .great . work with a pure .

you seem to have a great line of ameraucana and RedBank is wailing to send a pure marans eggs wen available .you don t need some thing else.

just breed them to a higher standard and keep them pure.

to do a good breeding fo a long time without running into inbreeding problem you need to have 2 pen for each variety you want to keep .

one pen Cockerel line .the other pullets line. they can be related but with a little variation possible.

so you need 2 pen for the ameraucana and 2 pen for the Black copper marans.

you have a plenty of time to organize your self.

first you need to get the marans eggs and hatch them ,rise them and select a good one to breed from the next year ( so you don t need 2 pen for them yet ,future plans )

hope we wil be able to help you here in this thread . feel free to ask any question .don t be shy .

Hi gimmie birdies.

the one on the left is too black access of Melanotic pigmentation .

the one on the right is the proper one no sign of any white on his wing feather . white dot next to the beak is a great sign too NOT a pinguiny type .

I like him a lot because he is a true ER/ER let see how he will feather up . keep you eyes on him .

i like the way he stand a true marans cockerel .

black one is a pullet.

Hi all, new to this thread. I was curious as to what you think of my BCM pullet. She is about 16-18weeks now. I got her from a breeder who says her eggs should be a solid 7 or darker. Thanks for any input.

I agree with that. Is this something that is just associated with a bit of over melanization or incorrect coloring ?

I like how wide she is, she should be a good layer once she starts. I say this considering the fact that she isn't too "u" shaped. I read a article once that talked about how hens with "u" shape, or high tails would struggle to lay eggs and even might cause them to only lay smaller eggs. (sorry off subject lol)

Type wise she is on the money.

great mass.
long and wide body.
long and flat back
nice tail good form and Angle .
nice wide and deep chest.
nice coppery hackle.
nice shanks medium long and well feathered .nice color too.
wing well held close to the body

Fault = a little fluffy at rear and around thigh . easy fix NOT a huge problem

my problem with here is a black fluff on her face .it isn t normal . marans hen should have a nice face free from fluff or excess down feathers.

it is not just a melanization is a black fluff like the Ameraucama but not well express .

I have a wheaten hen like her .don t know where did come from ( people added to the marans other breed )

We see the Atavistic return of the recessive gene.

you are alright about the laying trait from the width between her thigh .

Now I see what you mean about the face.

@Chooks man I was wondering if the comb is less significant thing on hens, by this I mean, should we be paying much attention to the shape and conformation of it? I know in roosters/cockerels a good comb is important, as you would try not to pass on traits for sprigs, "s" combs, or anything of the sort.

Hens can carry all the same comb problems.

Correct. I have seen pictures of mature hens with comb defects on the marans sites. Though I suppose pullets can take a while to fully develop their combs. And aside from the more obvious defects you'd have to take a close look with some pullets to notice something smaller like a sprig.
