International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have not named the three cockerels that I think are potential breeders so I'll refer to them as C1, C2 and C3 for reference purposes. All of my cockerels lost their tail feathers at about 8 weeks so they are just now growing back. This is C1 hatched on April 30th:

I like this one quite a bit.

Seems like just the right amount of color on his chest, good copper colors and nice leg colors.

I do think he looks like he has a bit higher, tighter set shoulder than most marans but I too am still a beginner and that might be a unimportant variation in body type.

He is not Otis.

He has a good comb.
Good eye
His ear tuft looks black
He looks very dark, is he more mahogany than copper. it could be that he is in the shade
He has a good body, nice long back
Good color on his legs
He looks very balanced

Thanks RedBanks - C1 may be a shade darker than Otis but it's close. His ear tufts have some copper near the ear canal but gets darker on the edges (if that makes sense). I'm not sure if the ear tufts will get more copper as he matures. Too me his color looks better than the pictures show. His pics were taken in the morning.

A couple of years ago I had a BCM Coq that had very good type, comb and balanced color at 6 months (He is my avatar). By the time he was 18 months old he developed white tail fluff, halo on hackles, and white ear lobes (which I'm pretty sure is a DQ). After that experience, I tend to keep my prospect Roos a little longer to see how they change for good or bad.

I commented on your Avatar I don't know how you see that though. I liked him. I just read that white feathers are not a DQ in APA SOP, just a fault. The best cockerel I ever owned, his pic is in the post with Kfeltons young birds didn't have a tail for a long time then it was wry. I was sick. So I know what you mean. I have the birds locked up and only let them out at night for an hour before dark. I have a very tenacious predator.... anyway, I was watching Bello and Claude. Claude has a halo but other than that he is pretty much a smaller version of Bello without the giant tail. I didn't see it before and they both looked different all along, they took different routes to get to the same place. I think we have to hold on to them to see how they develop because they certainly do change. I was glad to see Chooks Mans "No Way Jose" cull list. I hate keeping them, feeding them and accommodating them when all along they should have been culled. I did much better this time. I had 18 and got it down to 3.

I AM a true european forever but I love this thread. when I make breaks (I work from home) I check the posts. as today was the last working day (holidays) I was too busy. I even didn't have time to read all of splendid information. at the beginning I fell in love with bcm but I got hooked, lol. when I saw nice photos of silver cuckoo marans I decided to give up a part of my vegetable garden (which is disaster anyway) and I am making plans to make a new coop.

I have just tracked the parcel with the monique's eggs but it is not clear whether it left france on 8/8/16 or it has arrived in greece. I cannot wait till morning to call the post office. it seems I will not be sleeping tonight.

I do no blame you if you don t sleep .

Silver cuckoo marans are my favorite of all the marans

we want to see a pure BCM from Monique in this thread . we will study them segment by segment ,from comb to toes . feather by feather . I m telling you 30 year of line breeding is going to be available to us to study.

The name Red-Brown may seem strange for a bird that is a black breasted red in the cock, and a red birchen in the hen, one needs to look back to the beginning of the breed to find the reason. The first crossings were made using English fighting cocks, the “cockers” named the colour of the birds by what they could see when they were fighting in the pit, the breast and the back. So a bird with a broken breast (black with red/brown markings, and a red back was called a Brown Red. The Brown-Red, has been the main variety of the breed for numerous years. Indeed, more than 80% of the members of the Marans Club of France have selected the Brown-Red variety.
