Some copper on the chest is acceptable and desired. Even roos that have a lot of copper leakage on their chest can still be useful in the breeding pen, like if paired with an overmelanized hen. Just like a mossy hen with a lot of copper leakage can balance out a roo with black shoulders (like in my case) or poor copper coloring in the saddle area. Even though mossy hens are not desirable for show they can still be useful. You can read up on the APA standard of perfection on the Marans of America Club website. If my memory serves me the standard allows for a black breast with Persimmon red (hope I spelled that right) flecks of color on the chest. You dont want a solid or overly coppered chest but some color there is good. Chooks man can correct me if Im wrong about anything. I am still learning myself.![]()
Here we are adhering to the original standard, if you have any questions about the standard you can read up on it here https://translate.google.com/transl...gle.com&sl=fr&u=http://marans.eu/standard.htm .
That is the translated french standard, it says a rooster and hen are both allowed to have slight copper "staining" on the chest.
