International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Some copper on the chest is acceptable and desired. Even roos that have a lot of copper leakage on their chest can still be useful in the breeding pen, like if paired with an overmelanized hen. Just like a mossy hen with a lot of copper leakage can balance out a roo with black shoulders (like in my case) or poor copper coloring in the saddle area. Even though mossy hens are not desirable for show they can still be useful. You can read up on the APA standard of perfection on the Marans of America Club website. If my memory serves me the standard allows for a black breast with Persimmon red (hope I spelled that right) flecks of color on the chest. You dont want a solid or overly coppered chest but some color there is good. Chooks man can correct me if Im wrong about anything. I am still learning myself.

Here we are adhering to the original standard, if you have any questions about the standard you can read up on it here https://translate.google.com/transl...gle.com&sl=fr&u=http://marans.eu/standard.htm .

That is the translated french standard, it says a rooster and hen are both allowed to have slight copper "staining" on the chest.

Backtracking so I can take legible notes of all the helpful tips.

I forget this is an International thread. ;) I am going to read over the actual French standard. I was under the impression the American SOP was based on the French stardard. I am going to print it out for reference. :)

So what percentage is acceptable for copper on chest? Most of my cockerels seem to have colour on chest.

I like the colored chest cockerels better than a pure black chest.

we are having a crisis of black pullets some thing we are doing is wrong.

we need to focus on the roosters colors to fix this problem .

there is not percentage on how much copper should be on they chest , is up to us to manage that .recording to the hen s we are going to mate him with.

LIKE I said before ;

Colored chest rooster MATED to a black chest hens.
Black chest rooster MATED to coppery chest hens.

the standard allow for both ; coppery chest or back chest . is up to us to find a balance is the breeding pen .

Show cage is a DAD END.
Breeding pen is moving toward the future.

Glad u like him also. He is a spunky little fella. He likes to pick fights with my husband's Game stags. Lol. He thinks he is the ruler of the roost.

he will be a future ruler of the roost .

he have a think head not much intelligence but a lot head butting ......

always select a cockerel with a marked chest when young .they will lose some of it when molting .

we have to understand the standard very well ;
there is a difference between what the standard allow and what goes in the breeding pens.

both rooster and hen can have a coppery spotted chest Or Black chest . BUT the standard doesn t tell us they go together in the breeding pen.

rooster with a colored chest goes batter with a black breasted hens

Black chest rooster goes better with a colored chest hens .

always seeking Balance not Extreme .
