so how hard is it really? To be able to get rid of sprigs? Or use the roo anyway and just keep culling for sprigs when it appears?

I'm messing with a landrace breed (Swedish flower hen breed) but am lurking here to learn.

if you are working with a comb .than you need to focus more on the hens comb not the rooster comb.

the cockerels inherit most of they genetic trait from they mothers ( Dam ) and some from they fathers ( Sire)

good chooks breeders have established they pullets and cockerels lines . . they know how to balance the pairing and keep working on each genetic trait separately .fixing it on the cockerels line or the pullets lines .

if you are working on body color ( pattern ) than the Rooster s your best chose NOT the hens.

if you are breeding for the comb .her how you do it.

Need a hen with gorgeous comb and type.

Need well colored rooster regardless of his comb ( well colored )

mate this 2 parent F0 and you will get = F1 progeny .( they will be a good number of chicks with a good type .color and comb ).

take a best cockerel from the F1 and mate him to his Dam = you will get F2 progeny most of them with a good type , color and great comb .

take a best pullet with a good type and great comb ( like they Dam) and mate them to they sire ( hes welll colored but bad comb) = you will get other F2 line . most of them will have a great type ,well colored and a nice comb. keep a nice cockerels from this F2 and mate him to his Dam F1 = you will get F3 great type ,well colored and great comb.

you have to hatch a good number and do some culling

3years of selective breeding you will have strain with a great comb . NO MAGIC .SELECTIVE BREEDING

you see they didn t just cut them like most of a cattle man .instead they perfected the art of breeding them .

my hat to this type of BREEDERS .they do no take a short cut but they do they home work .

here an example of how i fixed the bad comb .

Rooster very bad comb . Charlie . pure silver English marans . he had a truck load of fault . plus was expensive $ 250 Australian ( 2014 )


you see the poor bugger didn t had much to going for him .Except his strain purity , great eyes, Silver barring gene. come out from dark imported egg n 8.

Here the french wheaten hen with a great comb . I mated her to Charlie to recreate the silver wheaten . and a silver cuckoo .

her Cleo ( bought her 2014 as point of laying pullet)

you can see her behind Edward . look at her comb gorgeous.

here they F1 progeny = pure silver cuckoo pullets and Silver/gold cockerels .all with a great comb.
