You welcome .
your chooks are nice and I wanted Monique to see them ,they come from her in the first place so it is nice for her to see them and know there is a good breeders out there enjoying her work and keeping the good work going.

Bello breed him first . your hens are welll black ,they will correct him .

with a rooster is not strait forward. because they don t lay eggs ,So we don t know if they have a genes or NO .
so we breed the chosen rooster to the correct hens and keep only the good one . that will give us a chance to conserve a dark egg genes if they are there.

I said it many time .we can work with a chooks carrying a fault as long as his /her paired with a correct chooks for that fault.

you have to know we are breeding Bello for other quality he have ( truck load ) and save the dark egg genes if he carries them .

Is there any way to choose a quality marans as a chick?

I know you have mentioned bits and pieces of what you notice here and there, I am wondering about the visible characteristics of a good bird even when it is young.

What I have noted you mentioning is things like width between legs, chunkiness and less penguin type, these things are noticeable even when they are quite young.

Is there any other tips and tricks for choosing good chicks?

Thanks in advance.

yeah there isa lot marans trait we can select for as chicks ;
1) type = we keep a chunky chick and we cull the skinny one.
2) less white possible ( only under the bally and chest ,tip of they wings )
3) strait legs and well spaced ..
4) healthy ,robust chick.
5) physical defect .
6) recessive melanin . black comb / wattles and toes nails ..
7) long chick (long back ) NOT a square chick .
8) short legs chick NOT a taller legs .
9) blue/green eyes Not a black /brown eyes.
10) chicks with a brown dot on they head sign of purity of a BCM strain .are a keepers .

chickengr is that a Greek saying ?

chooks man

yes, from the ancient greece.

I have a question: a friend of mine has a cockerel (about 2,5 - 3 months old) that came from a very dark egg. unfortunately he is totally black so far. if he remains black would it be wise to mate him to a hen with straw hackles? he is the only cockerel from the dark egg.

that is a theory any way .the Melanin and the mahogany ( causing the bird to become black ) will convert the gold ( straw hackle ) to copper .

but we have to look at the other thing as well .we have to find a good match to yield a correct progeny .

Ask him to take photos of his flock ,so I can see .what could be done .
