International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hey Chickapee,

Here is my critique:

Head - Good shape, strong
Comb - good size/shape. Comb should be of average size.
Wattles - On the large size, Wattles should be of average size.
Ear Tufts - He appears to have copper colored ear tufts (good). Please confirm. You want to avoid dark colored ear tufts as he will produce pullets with no copper hackles.
Eye Color - Inconclusive because Pics are too dark or camera flash. Eyes should be orange and bright. You want to avoid dark colored eyes.
We need a good close pic of his head so we can see eye color, ear tuft color and to see if comb shows evidence of side sprigs, etc.

Body Color - Really nice copper hackles and saddle fearhers, nice red shoulder, lower body has a good matte black color.
Body Type - Appears triangular, good size but lacks mass and depth
Chest - Shallow. You want a full, deep chest.
Back - Appears he has a short back which causes the tail to ride high
Tail - Tail angle is greater than 45 degrees. 45 degrees are slightly less is preferred.
Leg Type - Long legged. Legs should be of medium length with good mass.
Leg Coloring - Good slate color. You want a medium slate/gray color with pink undertones (skin beneath the scales)
Leg Feathering - Looks good to me.

My opinion is he has more good qualities than faults. If you breed him to a hen(s) with overall good type/mass, long back, average sized comb/wattles then a fair amount of his progeny should be of good type, mass, coloring, correct tail angle, etc. Did you hatch him from your own stock or from eggs you purchased? If from your own stock then my question would be is he of better quality than his sire? If the answer is yes, then I would breed him. I would suggest single mating (1 cock x 1 hen) so you can better track which hen corrects more of his faults.

As you will learn on this thread - most faults can be corrected in a few generations with selective breeding. Chooks Man is our mentor and resident geneticist so he can help you match your hens with this cockerel.

Good Luck,
Keith

I m impressed you sound like me now .ha ha ha

only thing I ll correct is ,his back is not short causing the tail to be at the highest angle. his back is correct but his tail is too high and a little longer ,
I ll mate him to a hens with a smaller tail at the lower angle. they need to have mass .

I love his red copper and his black. his chest is gorgeous

Thank you so much, he is heaps better than his sire. If I didn't get a male from him that could be improved I was going to call it a day. These were hatched from birds that I hatched from purchased eggs last year keeping the best and culling the rest. I only had one pullet and about 5 cockerels. I Bred the best one and afterwards he grew a white tail feather so he went to freezer camp. His progeny look so much better. I will try to get better pictures with my camera instead of the phone and post them. There are some that are a definite no, one has a wry tail, but is otherwise gorgeous. Anothers comb isn't good. Colour wrong on another the list goes on. I really appreciate yours and everyone else's critiques. I want to produce the best birds possible.

Thank you. I really appreciate your critique. They are definitely a work in progress. He is only 5 1/2 months old. I am hoping he will fill out a bit.

I hope everyone is OK.

chooks man

LL

number 1 ;
great type.
deep chest
good head.
great back long and tilted .
nice short tail at a great angle.
good colors shank
great red shoulder
Eras tuft great color
nice wattles good size .

what bad .
shank with far too much feathers.
his copper is more golden ( straw type or just a light
not great comb .
parasitic white on this shank feathers.
a little fluff at the base of his tail.
I think his thigh are fluffy

LL

he is almost great ,few faults I can see .
1) too much fluff at the base of his tail ( nightmare to breed out BECAUSE the hens with this genes don t show any fluff but they carry it and pass down to they progeny ) test mating is only way to find out the hens without this parasitic genes and breed from them .
2) 2 extra point at the end of his comb .

What good about him EVERY THING ELSE
Great body type .great posture .
deep chest .well colored
nice long flat back ,nicely tilted .nicely colored ( great copper)
great lancet
well colored shoulders .with a split at the top near the back . SHOULD be one pattern rich red colored . he is not far of one generation away if matted to the correct hens,
nice head well placed
nicely colored ears tufts .
beak nice color
good size wattles
strong neck nicely colored ( good copper
nice black free of sheen only on the wing and the tail
well feathered shank and correct colors .great tail short and great angle .
