International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Keith,
Thank you for notating what Chooks Man said about inherited traits. I knew I saw it on this thread somewhere and now I won't have to go back looking for it.

I noticed you talked about copper colored ear tufts as being part of an over melanized bird. I was reading the black copper Marans club website last might and I believe they listed having copper color tufts as being preferred but darker red was accepted. I would go back to confirm but I'm on mobile. Sorry, I very well could be remembering wrong but I just wanted to point it out.

Thanks to everyone for being so knowledgeable and for the people asking the questions. I'm more of a lurker but I'm gaining big insight from everyone here. :]

Copper colored ear tufts and a little bit of copper speckles on the chest are what you want to see. Black ear tufts are usually on the very dark mahogany hackled birds, in those lines hens will have no copper hackles. To some people on BYC any copper on the chest is over colored but I know that is not what KCrandall was writing and it is not how the SOP reads. He knows that is what you want to see especially if you need color on your hens. There is a great article written by Curtis Hale on the LP website about breeding BCM. Very interesting and I have posted it here before.

I will have to search the thread for that article redbanks, sounds like a good one! Thank you

Hey Bullets,

Over colored and overmelanized are two very different things. Over colored BCMs have excessive color on the body such as males with too much copper coloring on the breast (should be black with a small amount of copper) or females with mossy feathers. Overmelanized means a male or female that lacks the appropriate copper such as hens with no copper in their hackles or males who lack the red coloring in their shoulders.

Overmelanized males tend to have black or dark ear tufts whereas over colored males tend to have copper colored ear tufts. A BCM male with a small amount of color on the breast and copper ear tufts is what we are looking for to put the desirable color in the female offspring.

Hope this helps,
Keith

Are these both hens?! Bought them as a breeding pair but as I learn about the breed I am thinking they are both pullets. Forgive me... I am new
