International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Nice birds Chooks Man - very good type and balance. You got a good recipe working - Well done!!

Keith

thank you .
I m well pleased with them ,specially after the Spring incubation ( 70 eggs ) blow up .

managed to hatch around 400 chicks ,smaller number by my standard but better quality and health .

most of the breeding combination worked well for me except few muck up
Wheaten bad result .all the 3 rooster where useless ,very nasty to they ladies ,so the fertility was bad and a few chicks that hatched where small because the hens where not eating properly running away from the rooster all the time .

one thing I m very pleased is = Healthy chicks no twisted head syndrome . most of the marans chooks specially the wheaten are infected with this sickness .

the other thing I m well happy about is the early feathering time . most of them exhibited this valuable trait .

I can t wait to see them fully grown and how they are going to be colored up .

I will do that from this point on, as I intended to but the last two chicks got mixed up in the hatcher. Those big Marans chicks can push right through my rigged up basket separaters. Lol

Any chicks with heavy middle toe feathering will be banded with zip ties at birth and probably wont be used as breeders. Same with heavy parasitic white on faces. I want to be picky in choosing my future breeders.

Cooper has more heavily feathered legs so Im thinking he is the culprit for the middle toe feathering.

it is always nice to know when your breeding chooks who is doing what ( what sort of chicks they are throwing ) at the early stage of breeding .

if copper is the cause than use him less .better for you

use Mud if his chicks are better quality at hatch .

Hey looking for some info. I have had a sick rooster who I lost yesterday. He had been sneezing and wheezing. So I seperated him from the flock and gave him a round of water soluble antibiotic. Then added ACV to his water. He was eating and drinking. Then after a couple days he had a foot that he lost mobility on. He would "hop" around and make it work but it wasn't right. He had no swelling, nasal or discharge of any kind. His poop was normal. He was a year old blue copper Marans. What the heck happened?! What else should I have done? I really thought he was improving...My Marans hen has been sneezing about a week now but no other birds. Today she started losing feathers around her neck. all the other hens are fine... And all housed together. Any one have thoughts for me? I posted this on another medical thread but didn't really get any info

your rooster could die from many things .specially 2 chooks sickness cause what I you describing ;
1 ) New castle disease
2) Marek disease

I had 2 rooster that I bought last year from a breeder who vaccine for this 2 diseases .but when I got them both of them died a same way to you rooster .the vet said one had Marek and the other had New Castle .

some time the chooks can be a carrier of some nasty but they don t show up when they are well cared for tel some thing happen ( bad weather , bacteria etc............) them they drop dead .

your hen need more protein and Antibiotic .plus dry and draft free small coop .

Hi chooks man! Congrats on some beautiful results this year. Your dedication looks to be paying off greatly.

Can you elaborate on the "twisted head syndrome?" First time hearing of it. Would like to learn more, as I am raising Wheaton this year also.

yeah you can say did pay of .
this year I done them my self ,normally I let the worker look after them .they don t look after them as mach as I do .

it is more enjoyable doing the work my self .I get to know every chick from inside out .plus I have more time to observe them too .

TWISTED HEAD SYNDROME . it is called my many names any way .
here the syndromes ; most of the time is not fatal ,normally the chicks will get get better after few weeks ,that why people bred them back to they flock .
the chick head get twisted down word ,they put it between they legs and walk back word .tell they get stopped by some thing or fell over.

the australian wheaten strain is very old and has been in isolation for a long long time .over 60 years since last import . so they ave been ( some of them not all ) badly .

when I started with a marans in 2014 .I bought 1000 fertile Wheaten eggs from 13 breeders . 10 breeders had a THS. and 3 where healthy chooks . I m working with this lines ( WA line , NSW line and VIC line.)

I don t think the American wheaten are infected .no body talked about it in the marans thread .

sounds like wry neck but what you say looks more like something genetic. do they get better with vitamins only?

Yeah I thought wry neck or stargazer chick when I saw twisted neck too

yeah it is called by many names .

it is genetic nothing we can do about it except breeding it out of the flock .

like I said ,because in most cases isn t that fatal ,the chicks will get better ,the people breed this chicks when they are older back to they flock.

some chicks take them a week to get better other take the over 4 week
