I started my marans with similar. I hope I am on the right track.

when you talk about combs, do you mean you should work on size of comb or shape?

I still have big combs at the roos but marco has a smaller comb. I will see the little ones how their combs will end up. I don't know if they are mario's or marco's sons. anyway I will not breed them with their sisters but with the other ones that have smaller combs.

btw, from the inbreed crossing I did there are no penguin type chicks. does it mean they are free from parasitic white?

I need to make the comb pretty . faultless .Shape /size /form too.
I m happy with the size that all ,the rest need work ( number /shape and size of the point ) get ready of the coronation at the back .
not a big deal .easy to fix this sort of stuffs.

Parasitic white = if the chick face is all black ( no sign of any white ) mean they are free from the parasitic white.

here some example of how the marans roosters /cockerels should look from the rear.
they should look strong ,wide at the shoulder and rear , well formed small tail NOT large neither open .large long flat back

VIKING3.

when we select the cockerel we need to look for the one is put together well and nicely colored not a big one. because this traits are strongly inherited from the Roosters
if they turn up to be big than it is a bonus .
hope this information should help some one to select a good cockerel as a breeder from they existing flock .

here a photos of a Black copper cockerel I ll never breed from .because he is lucking the red shoulder ( the Autosomal Red Ar) very important body color gene for the ER marans family genetic.
AR Red Shoulder . coppery spotted chest and Ears tuft
ar Silver shoulder, Silver spotted ( laced )chest and Ears tuft
But the Shoulder are more important than the other 2.
P1060259.JPG

he has a gorgeous body type and nice long back plus a great tail I can use him with other marans varieties who do not need the Autosomal Red like the Recessive white and the dominant white both need clear shoulder .
so even he is not a cull as a BCM but in the same time he is a asset to me to work with in other project .
all the marans varieties compliment each other .
more marans varieties the person have ,less culling is needed .

what do you get by crossing bcm and white marans?

1 of my girls from the second batch is overcoloured (mossy, looks like straw yellow laced chest). she can be an olive egger mother but I wonder if she would be useful for the marans breeding besides mated to a dark roo.

photo please .
laced chest is a good sign if there is the right amount .

what do we get if we cross a White to a BCM ?
there is 2 type of white .
1) Recessive white .need tow genes to make the chook white .
2) Dominant white . one dose is enough to turn the chooks white .
both of them are not complete dominant ,they are leaky gene .mean the gold and the black feathers come through them some times .

Plus both white are not chooks family genetic ,they are just modifying genes .So the white chooks could be any thing Er .E . Ewh .e+. etc...that what make them very hard to work with .
if we talk only about the plumage than a Recessive White X BCM Black copper ( split white )
Dominant white X BCM = 100% Dominant copper ( white chooks with some coppery hackle .some shoulder color and some of the lancet will be copper too .SO not a pure white chooks .
to breed a pure dominant white chooks we need a Silver based chooks .
it is a reson I crossed White Storm with a Birchen hens to introduce a Silver gene to the White line ,so the plumage can be pure white no leakage .
