International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have just lost an araucana chick. we had t-storm 2 days ago and she got cold. the runt and the cockerel who had runny eye are fine (not perfect but fine).

my beautiful pullet with the copper hackles had an eye shut. I am too worried now. it might be from the feed that ended in her eye but after the loss of another chick I am not sure. in my first batch I had 6 marans and 5 araucanas. they are still together with the broody.

sorry to hear about your ara pullet .
it is always hard to see them going like that .
it is a life with a chooks

the other pullet with a shut eye is catching some sort of could .
you have to put her some where dry and worm inside and clean her eyes with a worm water and dry it few time a days .give her some vitamin too.
here body temperature is low ,especially if she is trying to catch up with mom and sibling .

I put ointment 2x a day and give her tylan+baytril as I treated the other chicks and they got well. I am not taking chances with her. I will give her probiotics and vitamins to boost her immune system but she must be treated now.

I am fermenting corn, wheat, barley and oats for my big birds and I mix some of that water with the grower feed for my chicks. there are a lot of natural probiotics in there.

good on you .
you did well .the Splash can wait tell the next year for sure .

I like your BCM and BLCM chicks .they have the correct hatch down .no much white on them .great thing . minimum or not parasitic white on the feathers when fully grown .

all the best .

Thank you, The hen is a Self Blue Ameraucana and her first hatch. She is doing well. It worked well having a AM hen sitting on Marans eggs. No getting them confused with the blue eggs in that pen. I also shipped a friend 20 hatching eggs. It will help her get her flock going after she lost all but one of her Blue Coppers. Her only Blue Copper has a injured leg. I also get a better idea of what my rooster and hens are producing. I don't have the room to grow out very many in one season.

Started hatching a batch of Marans from Jack and his seven ladies yesterday. So far, I saw 9 fuzzy babies in there. There is a chance that the cream legbar roosters could have snuck in there, but I will know for sure in a little while. Jack has replaced his dad Jake now, so here's hoping it goes well. I did see a few with a lot of parasitic white down, and a few nice mostly black ones. When I get home, I might slip them all under my broody English Orpington.

much better!

good new .some new chicks .
you need to watch a Cream Legbar rooster . we wont to breed a pure marans ( selective breeding )
you need to make sure your roos are not jumping fences . NOT great for breeding a pure chooks .

photos please .

great move .
it is a best strategy to multiply your line without having a feed them .
like you said ,you ll know what your breeding flock are really up too .
more chicks we hatch from any given line is a good thing .because we ll be allowing the genetic traits to express them selves better .
100 chicks from any mating pair is a greatest number . complete genetic spectrum expression .
