I should have them moved it by Saturday night .
Sunday I ll post some photos of them in they new coop /run

normally they loose a little weight at first when they start running free ,but they ll build up nice strong bones .

it is nice that you have young chicks from different lines . you can compare they growth pattern and body coloring

the chicks in the brooder are fast growing. they eat a lot but don't have too much room for running (nearly 2 m2). I have a lot of cats around so I will keep them in the brooder for a while.

I'm really liking my BCM. They are very curious. Not skittish at all. Maybe because they didn't come from a hatchery and hence not manhandled and harassed? I don't know. I've had to earn the trust of all my previous chicks. Not the case with the Marans. They're 2 weeks old.

Sorry for portrait mode. Always forget to flip the phone.

nice chicks.

mine are tame too. are all the marans like that?

I have a question for all you BCM experts. Three weeks ago today, I hatched out 9 BCM. One of them has VERY feathery feet, far more so than any of the others and a large tuft of feathers at the top of his (I am pretty sure) legs. Is this pretty normal? The pics were taken at 1.5 weeks.

Oregonkat,

Looks to me like your cockerel is developing vulture hocks (long stiff feathers starting at the thigh projecting backward and downward) which is a fault and exists in some BCM lines. Vulture hocks is not a desired trait so I will not breed a Marans with vulture hocks.

Heavily feathered shanks / feet is not a major issue by itself - simply breed a heavily feather footed Marans to a clean legged or sparsely feather footed Marans.

Thanks,
Keith
