International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Oregonkat,

Looks to me like your cockerel is developing vulture hocks (long stiff feathers starting at the thigh projecting backward and downward) which is a fault and exists in some BCM lines. Vulture hocks is not a desired trait so I will not breed a Marans with vulture hocks.

Heavily feathered shanks / feet is not a major issue by itself - simply breed a heavily feather footed Marans to a clean legged or sparsely feather footed Marans.

Thanks,
Keith

I want to clear some thing up.
Heavily feathered shanks and the Vulture Hooks are totally different and not related .
they are governed by two different genes .
heavily feathered shanks gene is Pti2
Vulture Hooks gene is Vh

they are not related but they work together .there is a interaction between them .

So if we have a chance and the chose we should not breed from the Vulture Hooks . we should eliminate them . than we don t have to deal with it all the time . bred out NOT balanced out

Some updated pics of a couple of my BLCM Pullets from this weekend. They will be 12 weeks old June 27th.

Pullet #1 - She was feather preening so she was fluffed up and hanging her wings when this pic was taken. I like her type, size, long back, and copper hackles. I don't like her brown eyes and fanned tail. This Pullet had the proper hatch down.

Pullet #2 (2 pics) - I like this pullets type, size, long back, green eyes and copper hackles. I don't like her fanned tail. This Pullet also had the proper hatch down.

Both pullets were sired by Otis my BCM Coq who is well colored with a spotted copper breast. The Dam was a BLCM Hen with very little copper on her hackles, brown eyes and fanned tail.

I have high hopes for this BLCM Cockerel (son of Otis). He had the proper hatch down. I like his type, size, long back, green eyes, slate legs / feet with pink undertones, medium sized legs, strong head, copper ear tufts and copper spotting on his breast. I would like to see more red on his shoulders but he has a lot more growing to do. His sire was somewhat of a late bloomer.

His wing feathers are out of place because he has been fighting with the other cockerels.

Another BLCM Cockerel, son of Otis and full brother to the Cockerel in my previous post. I like this cockerel's color, long back, green eyes, strong head, medium sized legs with good slate color and pink undertones. He's on the darker end of the blue spectrum. He lacks the size and mass of his brother but he may be more colorful than his brother. This cockerel reminds a lot of Otis at his age.

I have a question for all you BCM experts. Three weeks ago today, I hatched out 9 BCM. One of them has VERY feathery feet, far more so than any of the others and a large tuft of feathers at the top of his (I am pretty sure) legs. Is this pretty normal? The pics were taken at 1.5 weeks.View attachment 1053686 View attachment 1053688 View attachment 1053690 View attachment 1053691

can you take a better pic of him? I first thought it was vulture hocks but it might be a wing. a better pic would clear it up.

she is stunning . great body type and well feathered .
I love everything about her .

pure black ,great

she is from my friend's line. but my line come from there too. my friend changes roos but keeps his hens.

my line pullets are nice too. I will post the pics later.

I have just found rat's droppings in the marans/araucana run. that explains bubbles in the eyes. the runt araucana died yesterday and the others are on the antibiotics. the guy in the veterinary pharmacy told me to treat the chickens with doxycycline and tylan together. he says it will clear everything.

if your friend is using a different roo over his hens ,than it is not a same line ,it is a cousin line . except if his roo is line bred .
I like her a lot any way .
