International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Chooks Man,

This is my other breeding pair - Otis and Thelma Lou.

Otis (BCM) - My best colored Coq - nice copper hackles, ear tufts, saddle feathers, well spotted chest and nice red shoulders. He has the orange-red eyes, nice leg feathering and light gray shanks with pink under tones. Straight legs, well spaced. The only thing I don't like about him is his tail - wry tail, long sickle feathers. He is well mannered, takes care of his hens. Not as large as Briscoe.

Thelma Lou (BLCM) - She is my most skittish hen so best pic I got. She has good size, decent type, good medium-sized legs and good leg feathering. You can't see it in pictures but she does have some faint copper color throughout her hackles. I don't like her comb (flop comb) and her fan tail which she carries high and open. She also the brown eye. She lays a consistent 5 and produces 4 eggs per week.

I'm thinking of test mating Briscoe and Thelma Lou this fall.

I wouldn't worry about your hen's combs. the french hens have worse combs and they have been accepted. even the blue hen has straight comb near the beak so it would be accepted by the french.

I agree with chickengr .a lot French marans hens have a bent comb .even the Standard allow a little bent on the comb .( I m saying a little at the rear NOT completely bent like the Leghorn hen .

The S shape comb is a Fault

Thanks Chooks Man! I agree with you on the comb, not his best feature, but if he colors up nice then I can work with him. He has one tail feather that has some very light blue or white. My hope is that once he molts the feather will come back the correct color.

Keith

you have to make sure if the feather on the tail is white or light Blue/grey .that ll be Ok.
the comb is not a problem for you ,you have a hen with a nice comb SO mate him to her and correct it.
Parasitic White ;
if his face was clear from any white at hatching ,than he is free from the parasitic . SO the feather on his tail if is white will molt away don t worry too much about it .

I have 3 cockerels (from another mating pair) with really nice combs with good type and size but they all have dark eyes. One of theses cockerels is not showing good color and another has white down near the base of his tail. I do have one dark eyed cockerel that keeps catching my eye - I'll post pics of him.

I do have one BCM Pullet that has a smallish tail, nice copper hackles but a dark brown eye. I'll post pics of her as well.

Keith

that is a good sign .you do a pullet with a small tail ,never mind her brown eyes . WE want to fix the tail in this future line not the eyes .

Otis seem to have great colored eyes .he ll help you to fix that but he is going to introduce a high tail too to his progeny .

you are in the same situation like me on the Wheaten line . I do have all the great marans traits but not in one chooks , each one of them carries the good and the bad .
it is a reason I m creating many line possible SO I can work to fix the fault and reinforce the quality independently in each line .when all is done I ll merge all this line to recreate couple of strong faultless line .

Well said my friend! My focus is to test mate different combinations to see which pairings match up best then go from there. The majority of Otis's progeny have the green / blue eye at hatch.

This cockerel had the good hatch down with very minimal white on his face. I'll take a good look at his tail feather to see make sure if white or light blue / gray.

Anybody interested in this guy? I dont breed, and I have 3 Roo's . He's not aggressive, and is 1 year old.

Chooks Man,

I checked the cockerel this morning, he has a couple of light blue / gray tail feathers - no white. When I held him up to the sun the light easily shines thru these light blue / feathers making them look white in pics. I also checked his wing feathers and fluff near his tail - no white. He has a small white tipped feather on one foot.
