International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well. That was a shock!
I put the first Rooster in with the pullers last night. I went out late this morning and he was dead. Wonder if he had a heart attack from being sooo excited with all the ladies??

Dvoice,

Oh no, so sorry you lost your Rooster! Very disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing his progeny.

Unfortunately, seemingly healthy chooks can die for no obvious reason. That's why it is important to have more than one Rooster if at all possible.

Take Care,
Keith

Does your FRF line have high/large tails? Antonio's tail has calmed down with the molt but some of my hens have very upright tails. They are thin and closed but too high, a couple are at 90 degrees.

High tails in my FRF birds, high tails in my LA birds. I will have to work hard, and cull even harder to get those tail angles down. I will get out and try to get pics of my FRF pullets I raised as soon as I can. :)

Here is my best FRF x LA cockerel so far. His father was Mud (FRF) over my LA hens.
He is just now getting his tail in good, but I'm betting it will be pretty high. Lots of copper leakage and shafting on chest, but I can work with that if I could only get a decent tail. :fl

Top pic is my oldest with one of my birchen Marans pullets, plus the blue silver/blue birchen(has anyone officially decided if it's blue silver or blue birchen? Because I'm running my birchen with the blue birchen and I'm going for a light lacing on the breast as per birchen, so.... Yeah...)
The bottom pic has our blue birchen Cockerel Handsome on the left and our cream legbar Cockerel Odysseus on the right. Handsome won reserve champion feather legged male, Odysseus won grand champion male crested bird at our state fair. My oldest is 8 so it's the first time she's ever shown birds, and there are no in state shows here for me. It was very exciting! Handsome is looking better and better, he even has silver ear Tufts. My birds need a color boost. My biggest concern with Handsome is his tail angle. It's rather high.

How exciting! Congratulations! :celebrate
You must be so very proud. Such beautiful birds, and your daughter is a a beautiful young lady.

I look forward to showing poultry and getting my son into it hopefully one of these days. I have never shown poultry so I have a lot of learning to do. But first, I have to whip these birds into shape.. they may all be the death of me first.
:th

One of my hens was broody so I let her have some eggs. Three eggs tried to hatch, one succeeded. Two could not get out of the shells. I think she abandoned the nest when the first chick hatched. I recently read that the increased calcium in layers feed is the problem. I am going to stop feeding laying feed. They really don't eat that much feed though. Free ranging bug eaters! I think it is a cockerel. Have thought so from day one. If it is a cockerel it is not a slow feathering one and that is how my line tends to be. Everything about him is male!
@Chooks man I believe you will like his dusty color, not sure about all the white, his eye color is what you like to see. 9 days old

Sooo cute! I bet he will be spectacular when he grows up. He is the beautiful Antonio's son after all. Looking forward to seeing pics as this little one grows! :love

sorry to hear about your loss .
I think you are alright he could have heart attack the poor dude .
was he over weight or did you see any thing not normal with him before you penned him with the hens ?like wet poo /dark comb /fluff up feathers ..etc

it is always hard for us to lose our breeders around breeding season .

I always keep back up .
3 roosters by variety minimum if I can

give your cockerel time to grow .
I think you culling too early

cockerel like this one should be evaluated at 6/7 month old or even a year old to see his true form .

his comb need work

She is wonderful. She was very gracious to me. I liked the Marans Aspirans forum, very interesting. It was just tough for me with the language and navigating the website.
