International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

The blue copper pullet I penned up (I have named her Dentelle, french for "lace"), laid her second egg today. It is slightly darker, closer to a 4.

Here is her 1st and 2nd egg side by side (1st on left, 2nd on right).

I just got back inside from penning up Maximus, my FRF x LA cockerel (Dentelle's half brother) in with her. Hopefully I will have some chicks from them soon. :)

It is so much fun working with the birds trying to make them better with each generation. Your eggs are beautiful. I hope they get darker and darker for you.

Thank you! Me too.. I'm okay with her eggs so far considering her mother barely laid a 3 and her egg was a lot more elongated than Dentelle's. It may take a few genenerations of breeding the blue coppers back to the black coppers, but egg color and shape will hopefully keep looking better. It's a lot of work but they are fun birds to keep. :)

Hope you guys don't mind me sharing a pic of my little wheaten marans that hatched. Just love the creamy hatch down. Trying to expand my marans varieties a little:)
Those tiny legs with tiny feathers fascinate me...
......tho I don't care much for feathered legs in general, they're a bear here in the winter.

We always love chick pic! How cute!! I love the color wheaten in chickens. We have several wheaten strains of gamefowl and they are beautiful birds. I would love to expand my color varieties of Marans but my hubby would shoot me! Lol.

Hi there,,,

May I ask what's the benefit of eggs marans? I mean is there any specific feature?

They are dark russet brown and beautiful. Aside from that, I really think they are the same as other eggs as far as nutrient content and taste. My husband prefers brown eggs amd swears they taste better, but I cant tell a difference in taste myself.

Khaled, the Marans breed is prized for its dark russet egg color. It is the darkest hens egg. They also have a beautiful spherical shape and sheen. I have seen some where it is difficult to tell the point from the base. There is a color scale that you can look at for reference. Breeders want to maintain a 6 or 7 on the color scale with hopes for an occasional 8 or 9. My hens only lay a 4 at this time. I believe I have had one 5. I am no expert, and have a lot to learn, but it is a very beautiful and difficult breed to work with. The black copper marans lays the darkest eggs, but the other varieties can still lay a dark egg. Dedicated breeders work hard every day trying to enhance the egg color in their line while also trying to maintain the desired body characteristics. Marans are also prized to being a delicious table bird. Hope this helps a little. Some of the experts on here can chime in and give you better information.
