International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Aint that the truth! I have like 2-3 good combs out of all my birds. Most of them are bad. Combs have been the hardest part for me to learn.

for me the comb is the easiest thing to fix . once you have just one chook with a correct comb ,the rest is as easy as having a cop of coffee .
by saying so ,we need to create a line just for this trait ( show quality comb ) to breed true and become a dominant one .

here how I work around this sort of problem and how I fix them .
first I have to catalogue my breeders chooks and classify them recording to they traits =
1) Body type
2) body mass
3) body color
4) egg color
5) Head - eyes ,comb .wattle and over all look
6) Tail .

Example = Tobambezi .
1) BT =Excellent .
2)BM = Excellent .
3) BC = good and complete pattern but darker type ( Mahogany ) NEED TO BE TUNED .
4) EgC = his mom 5/6 and his sister good 6
5) H = all great except the comb too big /not refine/double points NEED WORK
6) T = Excellent

Now it is clear to me I need to mate him to hens with a great comb and lighter hackle

I do this sort of work with all my chooks .when is all done it is easier for me to pair them and breed from them ,

Selective breeding .very fast progress . only problem with this method ( not for me) need to hatch a great number ,because of the different pairing needed to be done to reach the result required .

Lucky!! I love wheatens.. cant wait to get my hands on some. :D

Congratulations on your beautiful new chooks!!

thank you .
I bought them because they carries the Black Tail buff and the Salmon pattern genes . that what really I m after .
I do no need wheaten .I have a best line in the country .pure .well colored .great type and they lay very dark egg 6 for the wheaten it is a great plus .

My BTB and GS line need some new blood to strengthen they genome for the future .

What I like about him (keeping my fingers crossed these things don't change):
His back is long and sloped. Antonio has a flatter back and it doesn't help the tail set.
His neck is longer than Antonio's. I can see where that is important now. I love his tail. I think he will still have the body mass but in a more refined way. It will be fun to see how he develops.

he is taking a lot from his mama sister#4 not from Antonio ( talking body type not body color )
so he ll have a better body type /better long back /better tail set /and more Elegant than his sire Antonio ( Sorry to say that Antonio )

I have to tell y'all a funny story. Gus (my dog) is a very friendly guy. He thinks everyone loves him. I have great neighbors that tolerate his antics. He climbs into one neighbors fence to play with their dog and then climbs back out to go to the next house. Another neighbor told me Gus has been defecating in her dog's bowl. I was horrified but she couldn't stop laughing. A couple of days after she told me about the incident I got a text with a picture showing the evidence of the foul deed and the message read do you recognize this? I sent her back a message that read, Gus said he didn't do it. She told me he was lying and I needed to put him in the corner. I didn't let Gus run for a few days. I ran into my neighbor on the road. She said where is Gus, I haven't seen him lately. I told her Gus was on restriction, no TV and he is not allowed to leave the yard. It has become a big joke. Like I said..... I have the best neighbors and the craziest dog.

don t believe in what they say in the internet .

chicken and the goat in one pen . chooks will keep the pen clean from the ticks and bugs.

the pig can go to another pen with a chooks too . chooks always do a good job cleaning after them . watch the pig will find and eat the eggs not the goat my friend .

the day you get the land I ll help you design it .
which you all the best luck .

chooks man

I found the land I like but still did not sell the house. end of the year is not a good time to sell anything but christmas gifts.

the area is safe so I will not need pigs, lol. I will need help to design plot. it is about 160m x 27. I think (if everything goes well) to build a house after 60 meters. there is another plot just next to it with a house at the end of the plot (plot is 60 meters long). a nice old couple live there. they used to have chickens, marans included! they love animals and promised me they will pray that I sell my house and buy that land.

there is more land behind that plot that I might buy as well, but a bit later. at the moment there are about 4350 m2. I think within the first 60 meters I will put dogs, (garage in the corner and a path/road next to the fence), peafowl and turkeys (together), geese and indian runner ducks (together) and next to the neighbors house vegetable garden, no animals. the house and chickens in the back as well as muscovy ducks.. I will plant some trees and berries in the front and back yard as well. I think I will not get goats before I buy more land. I will need 2 new dogs in the back yard but I must get informed what predators there are (except foxes I have already seen in the area). I can get greek shepherds any time but they are too big. the other dogs I like are german shepherd and croatian shepherd. croatian shepherd is a hardy dog, almost never gets sick. looks like german shepherd but a bit smaller and all black. I would have to import them as I cannot find them in greece, but no problem.

I got my second egg today! I'm thrilled with the color!

This is next to egg number 1
