Gretchen laid her first egg today (Gretta's daughter). It's rather long looking.. hope her eggs dont stay like that!

you are alright ,some hens lay those long tubular type off eggs .poor selection .
some people are so happy and satisfy about the dark eggs they hens lay ,so they don t do any selection .

Day 20 and 3 BCM chicks hatched . those are F2 .Sire Tobambezi over his half sisters . working on the same line ( line breeding),all the eggs look good to me when I moved them to the hatcher 47 egg .not all BC .

will take photos tomorrow .

what other quality she posses . body type .hackle marking .tail angle .mass etc.......?

we don t only breed for the egg shape .it is too early for us we have to watch what we are going to breed out without loosing any of the good trait .

I have a couple of hens that lay these long eggs. Same lines as Gretchen I believe.

Yep Gretchen is FRF. Mud and Gretta, my original FRF pair are her mom and dad. Neither Mud or Gretta hatched from an egg that shape, and Gretchen didnt hatch from an egg that shape so its genetics from somewhere farther down the line at play.

She really isnt a good candidate for a breeder because one of her only good qualities was the *hope* she inherited her mother's dark egg color. Her mother, Gretta is my darkest layer. Both Gretta and Gretchen have the leaner bodies and long, high fanned tails.

Here is a pic of Gretchen from a little over a month ago. If she continues to have undesirable egg shape I wont use her if you think she will pass on the trait. I can just mate Gretta's son, Gideon to Gretta only.

one egg is not enough to judge any chooks by .
need the first 20/30 to have a real idea of the true genetic make up of any marans pullet

I don t think she is as bad as yo think .
I can see a lot good qualities in her .. her first egg is nor dull at all . let her lay more and see what she is capable of .

I like her dark under fluff and gorgeous hackle . eyes are good too plus the back is flat and long .
