I am not sure but I think there are differences in the tail. I think the U.S. calls for more open tail. I think the french is more upright pointy. To be honest I don't know. I hope chooks man will come on and clear this up.
there is no difference between the 2 standard .
the problem is ,the French standard is not specific in describing the traits we looking for . they let things open to the breeders to decide that all .but the US SOP people wanted the details that all .
Example . Tail = the French call for short and full tail .The US call for the same thing .
the difference is how the breeders see the rest of the tail .
the French found that the short, full ,thin and pointed tail on the hens will yield cockerels with a great short ,full tail not open .
the US breeders .think a short ,full open tail on the hen looks good .that all .but they forget the influence of this type of tail on the cockerels . most of the tail genes are Sex Linked genes .
So to select for a cockerel with a good tail ,you have to select his mama hen first .. I go with a French because the hen with open tail will never give a cockerel with a desirable tail that we are looking for .short and full .
for the show it is different story .you can breed a show line to the US SOP but never mix it with a pure french type . never work .
marans chooks should have a open tail when look at them from the rear ,but pointed at the top .forming the Pyramid shape .
open tail without a pointy shape at the top will give a FAN TAIL phenotype . major fault
some people are mixing between the pointed tail and the square tail . that all .
they think the square tail is an open tail .that is not true .poor description .
a square tail is not a fault is another type of selection .has to be closed at the top not open .other wise will become a fan tail .
chooks man
you see the difference .
