International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

It sounds like your birds are like mine. I have some very small birds in this hatch and some very big ones, especially the pullets. I will post some pictures. I wish you had more. It is so hard for me because these are the only BCM I ever see so I appreciate all the "descriptions" about this line. The good and the bad.

I will post pictures as they all grow so we can talk about them like we do. I really enjoy our discussions in this group, they help me learn. I need to get out there and take updated pics of my grow outs but it has just been so yucky out. My backyard is a mud hole thanks to my son and his 4-wheeler. And thanks to the chickens for eating ALL the grass. And to the snow melting to make it muddy. But at least the snow melted! :)

my cockerels tore the skins of the pullets back than the other pullets continue to peck the wounds. 2 of them have really bad wounds. I give them antibiotics and they seem to be ok so far.

I separated (3) boys and one of them tried to kill the other two so I separated him. I have no more room for chickens. the bully has a lot of gold leakage so I am rehoming him. I hope the other 2 will not start fighting each other. they were good boys today.

Topical antibiotic ointment or BluKote works well when that happens. How are the males' spurs? If you have older males, file or saw the spur down to where they are short and blunt to prevent them from damaging your hens. However, as big and cumbersome as Marans cockerels are, even when they are young and have button spurs they can tear up the hens with their big clumsy feet. I feel your pain. I just make sure to have plenty of females for the males so they don't pick on just one or two. They do tend to pick favorites though. They sell chicken aprons online! Very cute idea if you can keep them on the birds. lol

thanks. I gave her 1/4 of aspirin. she ate some olives. no gasping today. I removed the roof of the dog's crate and disinfected the bottom and changed the pine shavings. maybe she was gasping due to ammonia.

I hope she pulls through. If she is doing better and eating some today maybe she will make it. Good luck with her! :)

the boys are young, no spurs, no sharp nails but still managed to hurt the pullets. I give the antibiotics orally as the wounds are really bad. I am not taking chances.

no chicken saddles here and amazon does not ship to greece many products. I am thinking to make some myself but when it gets hot I cannot use them.

Yeah, Ive had a couple Marans Rooster do the high-step thing. Makes me laugh because they look like those soldiers that do the straight-legged high-step in military parades.
